I am truly amazed at the divine power that God gave to David. Remember 1 Samuel 16:7 states that Goliah's spear's head weighed six hundred shekels of iron. David is just a lad and Goliah's spear is awful heavy, too heavy for David. Yet, David used Goliah's spear to cut off his head. Has anyone thought of this! It had to have been the power of God to give David the strength to even lift the spear. What an awesome God we serve. There is nothing to difficult for Him. Hallelujah!

His height was "six cubits and a span," which, taking" "the cubit at 21 inches, is equal to 10 1 2 feet.

I love this TRUE story from the Bible. Never gets old, as my oldest daughter likes to say. And that's so true - it is indeed invigorating to read just how God can use ANYBODY that has big faith. I loved the comment about how they might feel about our sports players of today, and is also a good point.

Most of all, I'm so grateful this God is our God and He'll do the same for us as He did David!!
  • Ren on 1 Samuel 17 - 6 years ago
@Irene123 The average man’s height at that time was about five and a half feet so Goliath who was approximately nine feet six inches must have seemed really big to those guys lol Can you imagine what they would think of the basketball players we have today?

Verse 49~The fact that the stone went through Goliath's helmet and sank into his forehead shows that David had divine help.

Verse 55~When Saul saw the courage of David he reasoned that he must have gotten his courage from his parents and he inquired who his parents were.

Our God is awesome. The story of David and Goliath reminds us of the power of God over ALL forces. After all, He is the Creator of the universe (multiverse) and everything is under His control. To draw from this immeasurable source of power, we must love and obey Him. We must stay at the centre of His will all the time and victory over the Goliaths in our lives, including sin, will be assured.

  • Irene123 on 1 Samuel 17 - 8 years ago
To B. K. Miller - Also, angels are Spirits; they cannot reproduce. I've seen this question on here many times from different men - never from a woman. As to giants; really now how big does a giant have to be? The Israelites were and are a relatively short people, like their 'brothers' the Ishmaelites. And look at f'ball and basketball men. They are giants.
  • Irene123 on 1 Samuel 17 - 8 years ago
To Brian k. Miller - There's nothing wrong with researching for things not found in God's word, but if He wants us to know something, i.e. Goliath's father - It will be in His word, as a general rule. Goliath's father isn't pertinent to salvation. Neither Goliath, BUT - his story was - faith in God and not man, i.e. Saul's armor.

You have to just love David; Ps. 20:17 - ".....but we will remember the name of the Lord our God." 1 Sam. 17:45 - "....., but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts ....."; (who is the 'phillistine' to defy the armies of the living God?!"). I love it, I love it; HALLELUJAH!!!
  • Nicola on 1 Samuel 17 - 8 years ago
David had faith in God that the battle is the Lord's n God would give him victory. He put onthe armour of God instead of flesh n succeeded.

Those that do know their God they shall wax and they shall do exploit.
David knew in him whom he believed and he was not ashamed.
Always know God and he will always prove himself as one in your life.
  • Brian K. Miller on 1 Samuel 17 - 9 years ago
Who was Goliath's father have researched this and cannot find a concrete answer. Some think a fallen angel. Could someone answer the question
  • Peggy Joan Hatch on 1 Samuel 17 - 9 years ago
To me this is to show us who fights for us and were not to get into fear: David's defeats before
this what gave him Faith to know he could do it again and he was upset that this giant defy the
army of Israel that was the Lords people! Shows only armor we need is Eph. 6:

Saul previously already knew David, so why did Saul ask the question in 1Samuel ch.17:55-58?
  • St_royal on 1 Samuel 17 - 9 years ago
Jehovah is the God that maketh impossible things possible, from the eyes of David cannot do anything, but being a respecter of no man uses any vessel that yields to his dealings , so he used David.
  • Anne on 1 Samuel 17 - 9 years ago
David spoke and acted in faith and it pleased God and he became victorious. Without faith it is impossible to please God.

David didn 't see himself as a servant of Saul like everyone else did, he saw Himself as a servant of the Most High God. He declared what he would do in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel. The God of the Battles.
  • Philo on 1 Samuel 17 - 10 years ago
Others saw Goliath but David say an opportunity
  • Guerdon on 1 Samuel 17 - 10 years ago
Have faith in God. And as His children we must be humble in everything we do. Never rely on our own strength but on His strength. But we have comes from Him and we must praise and thank Him. Everything is possible with God in His own time and will.
  • Ira on 1 Samuel 17 - 10 years ago
1 Samuel 17 46 This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel........The LORD is able to deliver our enemies into our hands JESUS is our champion .
  • Grace eguasa on 1 Samuel 17 - 10 years ago
We should always rely on God in every thing we do.As long as we have seen the power of God in our life before, we should know that he will show himself strong again.
  • Haronsonius on 1 Samuel 17 - 10 years ago
we shouldn 't be afraid of what we can see with our own eyes, who can ONLY destroy the flesh but NOT the soul bt HE who we cant destroy both the flesh and soul.
