Baptism was originally used like an "altar call" at a Billy Graham crusade. Peter indicates that the washing isn't what saves you, but the "answer of a good conscience towards God." It is believing to the point where you openly respond to God, and are willing to be openly associated with Christ. Baptism is a vehicle to openly identify with Christ. The quality of faith is what saves you. The thief on the cross wasn't baptized, but he believed to the point where he was willing to call out to Christ and be open about his faith in Christ. There are plenty of scriptures that tell of salvation apart from baptism, but a faith that is willing to be open and public and not secret is always evident. If you realize that baptism was the usual way people responded to the gospel message and openly identified with Christ, then it explains passages connecting baptism with salvation and also explains passages and saved people who have no connection to baptism. Other ways to demonstrate open faith in Christ: call upon Him, confess Him, love your neighbor, etc.

You need to know whom you are dealing with. And know this is is Jesus whom you have put your mouth on and are putting to death on the cross the one God send to save the sick and heal the land of dieses .Give sight to the blind because you have to give account of your wrong and what you do.

I think it is very clear, what peter is talking about when he says repent and be baptized, everyone of you; in the name of JESUS CHRIST ACTS 4:8 then peter filled with the HOLY SPIRIT,said to them rulers and elders of the people if we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a cripple and are asked how he was healed then, know this you and everyone else in isreal it is by the name of jesus christ of nazareth whom you crucified, but whom god raised from the dead that this man stands before you completely healed. salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.
  • Josh on Acts 2:38 - 12 years ago
Its easy to see how well all the verses harmonize together. Mark 16:16, He who believes and is baptized shall be saved... Acts 2:38 And Peter said unto them repent and be baptized everyoneof you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins..... Romans 6:1-6 says we are "Buried with him by baptism into death." But then you get to verses like Eph. 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith... That is excatly right. Faith leads us to repentance. We confess Christ because of our faith. Romans 10:9 Faith makes us do all these things. We are buried with him in baptism and raised THROUGH FAITH. Col 2:12

    That is awesome!
  • Phillip on Acts 2 - 12 years ago
Jesus said in Matt 26:28 that He shed His Blood "for the remission of sins." This same exact phrase is found in Acts 2:38. We know that Jesus did not shed His Blood because we were already saved, but in order that we would be saved. Peter is pointing out here, what Paul expounds upon in Rom 6:1-6 and Gal 3:27...that by be baptized we are contacting the sin cleansing Blood of Christ. Certainly we are saved by His grace of coming into this world and dying on the cross. But it is by being obedient to His word that we have faith in. Eph 2:8,9 do not say we are saved by faith ALONE. That word was added by men. We are saved by faith in that we believe His word and obey it. Those in Acts 2:37 were pricked in their hear...they believed....and when they asked "what must we do.." Peter said "repent and be baptized everyone one of you in the name of Jesus Christ FOR THE REMISSION OF SINS.."
  • Stanley on Acts 2 - 12 years ago
It seems that we have forgotten about Ephesians 2:8 & 9. We are saved by Grace. Baptism does not save us. We get baptized because we are saved.
  • Joseph Gakura on Acts 2:38 - 12 years ago
In Jesus name,I baptize you in the name of the FATHER, SON and of the HOLLY SPIRIT, Amen.
  • Ciscokid on Acts 2 - 12 years ago
Acts 2 is an account of men actually receiving NEW TESTAMENT salvation. Hello---men actually receiving NEW TESTAMENT salvation---and ENTERING the KINGDOM OF GOD>, just as Jesus mentioned in John 3:5 being born of water and spirit i.e. Acts 2:38. they WERE BAPTIZED IN
the name of Jesus. Folks can argue and debate all they want--the Apostles baptized in the NAME of Jesus. bc-- Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other NAME under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
WHY don't people WANT to understand???---SALVATION is ALL ABOUT the NAME of JESUS, it's the blood of Jesus that saves. It's that blood that saves from sin--NOT the TITLES Father Son and Holy Ghost. Father is NOT a name--it's a title. Son is not a name it's a title---a title only gives reference to a personal relationship--hello-a title only gives reference to a personal relationship-
A title is NOT a personal NAME---Jesus is the PERSONAL NAME of OUR SAVIOR. It's the ONLY name we can scripturally use in baptism.
  • Rito on Acts 2:38 - 12 years ago
peter was truly telling them that without being born again no one can inherit the things of heaven. truly people go to church but not yet born again, here peter told people like those that they can't recieve the gift of God. they had to be baptised first so that they can talk to God
  • Darryl on Acts 2 - 12 years ago
there is only one name giving to man to be save .jesus he,s all you need!!!
  • Prem Anand on Acts 2:38 - 12 years ago
This is in response to Pastor David J. Meyer's comments as to baptism be taken only in a singular name of Jesus is sufficient. Though baptism is given in the name of Father, Son and Holy Spirit.. it is still in singular form. All three are the one and the same, just God intended at different time zones of the world for them to reveal themselves does not make them three different persons, so in that case, we need to clearly mention the three names, immersed in water and as a sign of holy ghost anointing should speak in tongues. If your baptism is lacking any one of this or the teaching is taken only partially to convince your argument that "it is sufficient to give baptism in the name of Jesus alone" is a major mistake in understanding the Trinity. There are numerous verses in Acts to substantiate my faith... Acts 2:39 (not for a few selected, it is for all)
  • Bonnie Asher on Acts 2:38 - 12 years ago
Jesus Name is the only name.Name above all names!

  • Berlon on Acts 2 - 12 years ago
Acts 2:38 when Jesus left instructions to his diciples to go forth and baptize in the name not names of the father, son, and holy spirit peter thought what is the name of the father, son, and holy spirit its Jesus that's why you must repent,be baptized in the name of Jesus, and you will recieve the holy ghost.
  • Iscokid on Acts 2 - 12 years ago
I see the comments about Acts 2:38-some are very crude and insensitive. Acts 2:38 DOES NOT SAVE YOU
Yes the church started according to Acts 2:38 BUT--salvation is by a consistent prayerful and sinless life. You gotta take up your cross daily if you wanna be saved. Acts 2:38 is ONLY the START of the journey.
  • Lance Mahan on Acts 2 - 12 years ago
Isaiah 9:6 tells us who Jesus really is. He is the Son, Father and God. Jesus is the name you should be baptized in.( Acts 2:38,19:5,10:48,8:37-38)( 2 Cor 3:1) Out of the mouths of two or three shall the word of God be established. Many times did the scriptures say Jesus name baptism but only once did it sayin the name of Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost( Matthew 28:19) If you put them all together you get the name and that is Jesus. ( Luke 24:47) tells where and what name should remissions of sins and repentence should be preached. Matt, Mark, Luke and John are the books that tell of Jesus's birth, life ,death and resurrection and the resurrection begins in the book of acts and is the beginning of the Church. Jesus gave Peter the authority to speak on the day of pentecost in St John(21:15-17)( Acts 1:2) as well as the first chapter of Acts, whom Jesus chose the apostles.
People try to say well who told the apostles to go and baptize in Matthew 28:19? Jesus of course, I agree but who stopped Saul/Paul on the way to Damascus? The same Jesus? YES! Paul baptized in what way and name? Jesus.( Acts 19:5) No other name( Acts 4:12) as well as One Lord, One Faith and one Baptism ( eph 4:5) People will jump over the book of Acts because of what ever reason. Acts opens up the name. If you don't believe me see what is done in Jesus name in the book of Acts. Do a study but before you do it pray to Jesus and ask for wisdom.

    Jesus Bless
  • PAUL SHUFORD on Acts 2:38 - 13 years ago
listen if you think that your getting in GODS KINGDOM WITHOUT REPENTING AND BEING BAPTIZED in the name of JESUS CHRIST FOR THE REMISSION OF YOUR SINS THEN HELL WILL BE YOUR EVERLASTING HOME
  • David on Acts 2 - 13 years ago
ACTS 2 38 is the ONLY WAY TO SEE JESUS
  • Dale Johnson on Acts 2 - 13 years ago
Pertaining to 2:19...Look up; it's time for his return. I can't wait!!!
  • Christina on Acts 2 - 13 years ago
    @Tyler,
You say name and not names of the father, son and holy spirit is Jesus. There is power in the name. You may be a son, father, uncle, nephew,… however if you write a check to someone and sign son, father and nephew the bank will not acknowledge it. Father, son and holy spirit are titles the name is Jesus. God wraps himself in flesh to walk on the earth so we can be saved. When Jesus was crucified, he then sent the holy ghost which is his spirit, as our comforter.
  • Nita B on Acts 2 - 13 years ago
Continue---Baptism must be in the name of Jesus!! It's not good enough to use the titles Father, Son and Holy Ghost again I say you have to use the name not his titles, for example I cannot write anyone a check in the name of mother, daughter and wife because I have to apply the name. I pray for all including myself. God Bless !!
Romans 6:1-6 which is death, burial and the resurrection.
  • Tyler on Acts 2 - 13 years ago
I want to say Tonia's accusation to the trinity as a false doctrine is out of this world wrong, if she wants to use biblical proof then she should look at other texts like Matthew 28:19... Jesus says to baptize in the name of the Father, the son, and the Holy Spirit. or 2Corinthians 13:14, Ephesians 4:4-6, 1Peter 1:2,but there is one thing i want you to do... actually to anybody is to read it for yourself... you do not know if i could be lying to you, know i would never lie on something as serious as this. another thing is i am not criticising you for your thoughts, i just want you to know the truth
  • Tonia on Acts 2 - 13 years ago
You are confused because the trinity is false doctrine. Repent and be baptized in the name, not names; for the remission of all sins, not your sins. If you can read 1 Timothy 3:16, I hope that will help you understand.
  • Steven on Acts 2 - 13 years ago
Acts 2:38, being Baptized is not part of your Salvation; it shows that you are saved, read Romans 10:9-13, John 3:16. If you notice Jesus did not Baptized anyone, John Baptized him for an example for us, it shows the Death, Burial and Resurrection; the only way you can be saved is through Blood Of Jesus Christ.
  • Tracey on Acts 2:38 - 13 years ago
The correct wording is; we are to be baptized in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost? I am still a little confused...Father meaning God, Son meaning Jesus?
  • Homer on Acts 2 - 13 years ago
First I think, it reaffirms that speaking in tongues is definitely ONE OF the fruits of the spirit. Shame to those who teach that if you have been truly baptised by the Spirit YOU WILL speak in tongues. I have been baptised by the Spirit, yet I DO NOT speak in tongues. I am not a believer, I AM A KNOWER and I will pray for those who teach that.
