Verse 12-Lot may have moved to Sodom because it was a prosperous place materially. He faced the threat of losing all his good here. We want to make sure that we choose to put spiritual things ahead of material things.

There are several references to tithing in the Bible. Check out Genesis 14:20. A book I have that is helpful in these matters is Where to Find It in the Bible by Ken Anderson.

It's gratifying to read of your interest in this subject; the whole Book of Hebrews is so very special as it shows us the beauty of Christ Jesus & His superiority over the prophets, angels, Moses & in His (Jesus') Priesthood. Keep reading the Word of God & keep enquiring into its richness - it is God's Message for you to build you up & encourage you.

So, in this respect of what the Hebrews writer has given, Abraham is seen as not greater than Melchisedec. And this was shown by the fact that Abraham gave Melchisedec a tenth of the spoils of war, when in fact such an act would be reserved to giving them to the priests. Yet, there was no official priesthood then, as Levi (from whom the priesthood came) was not born, but in the olden days, the kings also sometimes served as priests. In this instance, Melchisedec was a king in Canaan & even though not having any heritage to a godly line, was still a man of God, we understand, whom God had blessed & endowed to specially serve his people. Abraham's coming to him after the war, prompted Melchisedec to give Abraham & his troop food & in return Abraham paid tithes to him. Genesis 14:18. So in this respect, Abraham, though the Father of many nations, was lesser in status to Melchisedec, who pointed to a greater King & Priest.

And because there was no record of Melchisedec's family heritage, nor of his birth & death, the Hebrews writer uses him to show that Jesus comes as his type, rather than from the Levitical priesthood. Even though Melchisedec was a man who still had a history, the knowledge we have of him, shows Jesus as his type: not from a line of priests; no descendants in his office as Priest; no commencement or close of his office as Priest. What is said of Jesus: He "hath an unchangeable priesthood" ( Hebrews 7:24), & because of this & His Perfection & Holiness, Jesus is able "to save (all people) to the uttermost that come to God by Him" (verse 25). That is, this Priest Jesus also became the Offering for mankind.

Without dispute, the line of Shem is the one that is constantly referred to in the Bible. Shem was the middle brother, with Japheth being the eldest & Ham, the youngest of Noah's sons. It was through Shem's descendants that Abraham came & from Abraham, the branch of the Hebrews (later Israelites & Israel) & of the Ishmaelites (later Muslims) split. You can see Shem's line in Luke 3:23-38 which leads to our Saviour, Jesus Christ.

And of course, this line of Shem is most "talked about" since God had called this line of people to be His very own, setting His Love upon them ( Deuteronomy 7:6-8) & through which He would one day bring forth His Son to be the one & only Sacrifice as payment for mankind's sins.

Zion, generally is referred to as Jerusalem (the City of David). Sometimes, it is referred to as the Fortress of Zion or Mount Zion. The earliest reference to Jerusalem is in Genesis 14:18, when Melchizedek, King of Salem went out to meet Abram. Jerusalem means, City/Town/House of Peace.

Melchezdec is God appearing with bread and wind representations of the coming of Jesus, the Baptizing of Believers, the shedding of Jesus's blood. The unyielding of man's dependency on GOD, The demonstration of GOD being everything we need (in war, trouble, time of peace and times of food needed for our health and our Everything} No matter what may come or go GOD is our answer in Prayer. Abram respected GOD to the Highest. He has manifested HIMSELF many times directing man to his awesome Powers and Protections. We serve the most High GOD, there is no one before HIM, no one beside HIM no one with HIM, HE is GOD all by HIMSELF. HE can be whatever HE wants to be when HE wants to.

I'm not confused here. I don't believe in war, but in this case they started it and I think they got what was coming to them. Don't mess with my kin.

Dear John, Melchizedek is a Priest of the God to whom Abraham gave the tithes of all after delivering his nephew lot who was captured during a war Genesis 14:18-23 . This singular act was the reason why Jesus could come from the tribe of Judah to become our High Priest of the New Testament forever making intercession for Us to Psalm 110:1-end, Hebrews 7:1-end . While it is so popular to take up this kind of talk, and apologizing to the ungodly for the Saints; it does not describe Abram! Genesis 6:3 Excusing one's self for failure because of the weakness of the flesh is disobedience!

What a world of danger and disaster do the ungodly have to endure! Just a glimpse into the kind of world going on all around "God's Friend Abram;" in which his nephew Lot was accidentally caught up in, because he was not as keen on this life of a pilgrim like his uncle was determined to live. Abram and his 318 men chased and destroyed five Nations' armies, and delivered the captives and the spoil!

Verse 14: Abraham took great measures to go rescue his nephew Lot. Lot chose a dangerous place to live, but Abraham loved Lot and wanted to do all he could to save him.

To Victor on Melchisedec/Jesus - Melchisedec was a theophany of God/Jesus. Jesus is God's N.T. name, just as Jehovah was His O.T. name. I think it's Jn. 1:14 that says God was manifest in the flesh, and the angel in Lk. 2 to Mary said His name was to be Jesus.

......but (!!!!) was Melchisedec...an appearance of Jesus taking place in the Old Testament???!!!

Melchizdek brought out bread and wine when he met Abraham ( Gen. 14:18). His action was a prophetic foreshadowing of the memorials of the body and blood of Jesus in the last supper.

God had many 'manifestations' in the O.T. Melchisedec was one, the burning bush another, Jacob's wrestling partner, and many more. God later, in the N.T. manifested Himself as Jesus Christ.

David, Genesis 14:14 says Abram armed his trained servants. Another verse that Abram said his eldest servant ruled over everything he owned. I consent to these verses that the word servant can sometimes be a protector or soldier. But, verse 1 Samuel 20:35, etc. does not say "a little lad went with him" was his protector.

In verse 14 Abram wasted no time to go and get his nephew. He speaks the wisdom of God in verse 23

Nothing good without Our Father the Lord Our GOD

I was amazed at Abrahams deep concern for the souls to be rescued.The material things were of little use other than refresh the men.It was the people who were the most important items to be rescued like unto our Lord Jesus Christs mission to recue the perishing and care for the dying.

To comment on Abrahm not receiving goods. because he was content. In this manner. Contentment with Godleness is great gain. He has been blessed by the MOST HIGH GOD. And blessed by someone that is held in high position. Melchisadec. This is enough to both of these men.

Hello Imrana In addition to my 2 part response to your question, a lot of people do not believe in paying tithes. Some have argued that it was in the Old Testament and not in the New Testament. However, tithes are mentioned in the New Testament as well. Hebrews 7 5 And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham Once again Melchisedec is not Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is God manifested in the flesh, 1 Timothy 3 16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory .

Part 2 of 2 Jesus Christ is God manifested in the flesh. Melchisedec was a type of shadow of Jesus in that Abraham paid tithes unto him. Melchisedec was not Jesus but represented Jesus as both king and priest. We pay tithes and offering to Jesus Christ, who is God manifested in the flesh. We pay a tenth part of every dollar we earn. This is to say one dime out of every dollar. Please read over up under John Chapter 1 my response to Linton concerning paying tithes and offering. Abraham was a type and shadow of us today. He is an example on how we are to pay tithes today. Then you read over in Malachi 3 6 thru 12. So whoever told you that Melchisedec was Jesus Christ is very much incorrect.
