Hello Carolann. You're referring to Psalm 51:19: "Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar."

Psalm 51 is David's cry out to God because of his sin with Bathsheba (the wife of Uriah). After his acknowledgement of his sin & plea to God for forgiveness, cleansing, & restoration of joy & fellowship, David brings to the fore a wonderful Truth: a Truth about a true & acceptable sacrifice to God. He's stating to God (verse 16), that it would be easy to just bring Him a sacrifice to deal with his grievous sin. Though God required various sacrifices (for various purposes) from the priests, their objective was hardly met because the main inclusion with that sacrifice was missing. And that which was missing is seen in verse 17, "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise."

Then in verse 19, David states, only "Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar. The sacrifices were meaningless if a true contrition for sin & a broken spirit were excluded. The burnt offering was performed for the acknowledgement of the sins of the people & for a renewed relationship with God. The offering, usually a bullock, was sacrificed by burning on the altar & the priests could keep its skin for themselves. But David writes about the "whole burnt offering", indicating the whole animal can also be sacrificed to the Lord & the smoke from the altar would ascend towards Heaven.

I believe that David was implying that for the sacrifice to be acceptable to God and that the smoke would be a "sweet savour unto the Lord" ( Leviticus 1:9), also required that the sinner's heart was truly contrite, making the sacrifice a "sacrifice of righteousness". David's grief over his sins warranted this true type of sacrifice.

I just Love the 23rd psalm

I was in despair over a family heath crisis and bad news on alot of fronts. So I turned all off and really handed over all my burdens to the Lord and he restored my soul. Hallelujah praise the Lord for having such great mercy on me.

The Hebrew word for rebuke is ga'ar which meanings include: to cry out, to reprove (meaning to blame; to find fault).

In Zechariah 3:2 the meaning could include: to check (meaning to stop; to restrain; to hinder; to curb) or to restrain by Moral Force.

We commonly think of rebuke as an adverse confrontation, but Proverbs 27:5-6 says, "Better is open rebuke than hidden love. Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses."

For a simple definition, according to the King James Dictionary, rebuke means "To reprimand; strongly warn; restrain."

What does the sentence of, "God will rebuke the enemies," what does rebuke mean?

Hi Gerry The 23 psalm is perhaps the most well known and for good reason, through out it God uses the analogy of the shepherd in regards to how God takes care of us who believe. The shepherds profession was to take total care of his flock in verse four the principle is no matter where the sheep went the shepherd had a staff that he used on the sheep to nudge or guide the and to ward off predators, he never beat or yelled at the flock because sheep are by nature gentle. Notice verse two He maketh them to lie down in green pastures beside still waters, it says still waters because sheep will not drink out of load rushing waters for them to flourish they need peaceful surroundings. This same analogy is used by Jesus Christ in the Gospels as being the true Shepherd and his sheep Know and hear his Voice.

If I could interject Dianne. Actually, when I read your comment, I thought that you were inferring something else. So forgive me if I've misunderstood, but just to state the obvious: Hophni & Phinehas were indeed the (biological) sons of Eli. Then in 1 Samuel 2:12, they being referred to as "sons of belial" was a derogatory term for people who were useless, worthless, or scoundrels. And so they were, as seen in the following verses (13-17). But you would have known that - though it might help Larus & others.

Hi Adam I bring to you something to think about, I believe that the Bible as originally given Holy men of God spoke as they were moved by Holy Spirit 2 Peter 1:20+21. That being said look at 1 Samuel 1:3 the two sons of Eli Hophni and Phinehas the priest of the lord were there. In 1 Samuel 2:12 it says the sons of Eli were sons of Belial they new not the lord. So the question is which were they? No this is not a trick just food for thought.

English Sacha Its interesting you mention this another take I read from a book on eastern culture on this is in biblical times there was one large entrance to a city the gate and one small entrance behind it that was only large enough for a camel to go through with one rider on its knees, hence eye of the needle. Hi Dianne , in London we have one of Cleopatra's needles , apparently , there were two of them outside Egyptian cities and all camels had to pass between them to entre the city but , the gap was very narrow so they had to unload their cargo that they were carrying in order to pass through the needles , so , the parable is basically about unburdening yourself of your worldly goods before you can enter the Kingdom of God .

Hi larus The greatest challenge when it comes to Gods word is getting by what translators added or just didn't understand correctly, Gods word when originally given had no capital letters commas, question marks chapter headings, it was in manuscript form. Also the bible is an eastern book with eastern thought, in the Gospels Jesus Christ said it is easier for a camel to walk through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Camel through eye of the needle is eastern thought. In light of that it is still The Truth as it says in 2 Peter 1:20+21 Holy men of God spake as they were moved by Holy Spirit.
