"And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre: the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan."
God himself introduced the matter of death,'And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age". (15.15) The Spirit now placing on record the burial place for Sarah," and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her."(17.16). Faith made her reckoned as the matriarch so her age is set down as with her Lord and spouse. "And Sarah was an hundred and seven and twenty years old."(23.1) The Spirit also records where she is buried so in the Bible her burial place is as memorial as of the shepherd king David, and Simon Peters refers to it. "let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day."( Acts 2.29) The phrase 'unto this day' refers to Jesus Christ and the day of regeneration.
Now what is the significance of the purchase price? 'This land is mine' and field and the cave establishes tha fact we are sojourners and pilgrims on the earth. Patriarch Abraham would not accept the gift of king of Sodom; neither would he in the land of Canaan. "and Abraham weighed to Ephron the silver, which he had named in the audience of the sons of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, current money with the merchant." A formal transaction before the Gentlles, in the very place God had promised to him. The generations of 'thy seed' are set in context of the Son according to the word. '4x100' represents generation of Jesus Christ. "And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs,.../and afterward shall they come out with great substance. (15.13-14) This great substance, is faith,'faith is the substance of things hoped for' we have here set down." For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God." (Heb.11.10)
