Jacob fearful of his meeting with Esau whom he had duped in an earlier instance takes precaution. Like that over the shoulder look that alerts the policeman on the beat of a malefactor on the loose, Jacob makes his overtutures to Esau who informs that he was on the way. He sends three servants instructing them what to say before they presented his gifts.(v.18) Finally he sends his family, "his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok./ And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over that he had." (vv.22-23)
Jabbok is one of the two streams on the east of Jordan. Compare Jabbok with Ulai mentioned in the vision of Daniel. "and, behold, there stood other two, the one on this side of the bank of the river, and the other on that side of the bank of the river."(Dan.12.5-7) "And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river," Here the angel on that side of the river explains why it was a vision while with Jacob it is as real since he limped in his thigh ever after. Whether on this side or the other Jacob is alone but his reality touches both the world of the Spirit. It is how we need consider 'our walk by faith and not by sight' "I will never leave thee nor forsake thee' is ever present. "Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God." 2 Cor.5.11,7) There shall come a moment in our lives, we shall be all alone, "Therefore thus will I do unto thee, O Israel: and because I will do this unto thee, prepare to meet thy God, O Israel."(Amos.4.12)
What is the significance of the numbers attached to the gifts? Firstly why 20 years in the house of Laban while the ten brethren sold Joseph for 2x10 pieces of silver? Jacob became Israel by prevailing upon God and man. Two accuses the guilt of the ten was against God and man.
