God had settled his Son for his eternal Priestly Service."The Lord hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek."(Ps.110.4) Aaron as with the Law of Moses was appointed by default. The Number 10 refers to the law of sin and death. A descendant of Levi (Exod.6.20), his failure was as much as of the Levitical priesthood to which he belonged, in that the order of priests 'were not suffered to continue by reason of death.'(Heb.7.23). The priesthood itself came to an end with AD.70. He died in Mount Hor at the age of 123.
Absence of his name in the list of Heroes of faith is conspicuous (Heb.11). His prominence in the history of the nation was apparently by default, as mentioned earlier and God allowed Aaron to serve Moses in deference to his own modesty. "And thou shalt speak unto him, and put words in his mouth: and I will be with thy mouth, and with his mouth, and will teach you what ye shall do". Thus he served as the middleman between his younger brother and the people (Exod.4.15-16).(See under P-principle of Association)
In the Golden calf episode he showed his weakness in yielding to popular pressure. He was not above envy when he sided with his sister Miriam against Moses.(Num.ch.12). She was directly punished for her sedition. In both cases he was spared because he was in His service. (See under M-order of Melchizedek)
The budding of Aaron's rod was a validation of his priesthood before the entire nation. (Num. ch.17). The rod was kept in the Ark of the Covenant during the wanderings of Israelites, seems to have been lost.
