I am preparing a book for commercial publication in the United Kingdom. The work will include more than 3,000 words quoted verbatim from the King James Bible (Authorized Version, 1611). These quotations will consist of full verbatim scattered verses and passages but will not amount to the reproduction of an entire book of the Bible, nor will I be publishing the full text of the King James Bible.
I understand that:
The Authorized Version (KJV) is public domain outside the United Kingdom.
Within the UK, rights are vested in the Crown and administered by Cambridge University Press under Letters Patent.
Cambridge's website notes that reproduction is generally permitted up to 500 verses for non-commercial or liturgical use, but it is less clear regarding commercial publications that use larger amounts of text without reproducing an entire book of the Bible.
My question is:
Do I require written permission from Cambridge University Press to include more than 500 verses (approximately 3,000+ words) of verbatim King James Bible text in a commercially sold book in the UK, given that the work is not a reprint of the entire Bible but a commentary containing quotations?
