    Mt.12.39-40 "Day and night"

    But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas./ For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly;

    Here we have Jesus in his humanity and he doubles for Jonah as he is the Son of man. As the Word which was with God Jonah was entrusted with the word of God. So he was sanctified by the word of truth. 'Thy word is truth' Jesus confesses in his prayer. ( Jn 17.17) Jonah would be under judgment had he abandoned his task fearing the enormity of it. It was God who first trusted in him. 'Is there anything impossible for God'. Had he left off in the middle the burden of Nineveh would be his, Thus we have a question of judgment here implied. In this context what is the significance of day and night as mentioned in this clause, "so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth,"?

    The answer is found in the day Four of the Covenant , where we have the symbol of two great lights: the lesser light rules over the night. (Gen.1.18-19)

    " And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good./And the evening and the morning were the fourth day."
