In an English court of law when a man is convicted and found guilty , the judge says to the convicted felon " Before I pass sentence have you anything to say?"
Tha man is given a measure of hike to say something , some verse tye judge the court and the world and waste the opportunity and are sent to the place appointed to them . The time given is for the man to plea or speak words of contrition that might if possible mitigate the sentence etc .
In John 8 we read ofvaxwoman " caught in the very act "of adultery" . She was then beyond all reasonable doubt guilty under the law and the sentence was death . But a careful reading of the law shows that both the man and the woman were equally guilty and thus under a sentence of death .where then was the man? There is a lot wrong with this case . Not that the law was wrong or is wrong but it's application was . She was caught in the very act . It comes to mind how long had they known of this breach of the law ? For many tnink they can use it as snd when they like to condemn others but as Paul says in Romans If you teach don't steal do you steal etc? But even if they had just found out which I doubt they were partial in only taking the woma? Probably because on the one hand they were all men and it's easier for a man to judge a woman than it is to judge a man . And the other a woman was more helpful to their cause of snaring Jesus . When Joseph found out that Mary his espoused wife was pregnant " being a just man he sought to put her away privately" If these men had been just and were in a quandary as to the proper course of a toon did they go discreetly to Jesus or did they go down the high street so to speak with her dressed for de envy sake but not enough not to draw a crowd. To bolster their ' position'.
Jesus was teaching in the temple we read and in teaching you need a quiet relaxed but concentrated atmosphere . Is it thought that they waited in the wings for a natural break and then request an audience ?
