    I have always heard that Saul had some kind of memory problem in that he forgot who David was (vv 55-58). But as I read the passage now, it seems that Saul never asked what David's name was. It even says in v. 15 that David left Saul to feed his father's sheep. So Saul had seen David not too awful long ago. I think that Saul asked Abner who David's father was so he would know who to exempt from taxes (v. 25). Just a small observation.
