Unlike the second coming this parable is a example of the mystery of the Rapture. It is the only parable that Jesus did not explain. Virgins represent believers in the bible. Oil represents the Holly Spirit. The only way we can live a life pleasing to God is getting and staying filled with the Holy Spirit. It takes lots of prayer and spending time with the Lord. No shortcuts.

Ask the Lord to reveal to you where you stand and he will do that in such a way that your heart will understand. Growth is not comfortable but God's goodness is continuously at work. When it seems that we are not what we should be don't be afraid. He just wants us to be faithful with what we've been given because it is designed to make us what he wants us to be. Our faith will make us whole.

Maggie (cont.); As long as we continue seeking Jesus and loving Him first and far above all others, and do not let ourselves slip into disobedience, coldness and lethargy; and we don't harden our hearts or grow indifferent and unbelieving; "As long as Jesus is on the throne and our faith in Him is intact; everything's gonna turn out alright!" We don't walk by feelings, but must deal with feelings.

Hi Maggie; The Holy Spirit will guide you into all the truth. His chief work is to convict men of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment; and so He will certainly FIRST work in those who of the Household of God in Jesus. When we do what is pleasing to God, He answers us with joy in our hearts. When we do evil, He condemns and convicts so that we'll repent and change. God gives us assurance!

How do I know if I'm being a good and faithful enough? I try to be and want to be, but I can't be sure that I am. It's frightening.
  • Eric on Matthew 25 - 8 years ago
Nothing much from me but thanks and praise to the Lord. Though I walk amongst the snares and demons pursue all around, I wait on the Lord. If he wills his servant to safety who then can harm me? There is no one else to seek. I ask in Jesus name. Amen

"Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps." NO DOUBT but every Christian wants to be loved and received into the kingdom at the last day; Right? All get excited to hear good teaching and expounding of the Word; all want to put that Word into action in their daily lives; Right? But is that really the truth about every Christian? Apparently for many IT IS NOT! How do we get that OIL?
  • A disciple on Matthew 25 - 8 years ago
"And five of them were wise, and five were foolish." Not necessarily half and half, but to show that its entirely up to YOU to either be wise or be stupid! You have come to Jesus in repentance, and believe in Him: AMEN! Now you have a Bible, and try to learn how to understand it and to become a good Christian. EXCELLENT! Ask the Lord for the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and for HIS understanding!
  • A disciple on Matthew 25 - 8 years ago
"And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut." While they were running hither and thither to hear the most popular preachers and teachers and show masters in the church world; the Bridegroom is going to come without them being ready! The Lamp won't work without oil in it and without the Holy Spirit no man is His!

"Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man.. and I was afraid and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo there thou hast that is thine. His Lord answered and said unto him, THOU WICKED AND SLOTHFUL SERVANT...Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents.. And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

Perhaps the wise virgins knew their spiritual condition needed work that could only be performed under the anaesthetic of darkness?

Steve, I believe that this incident, MATTHEW 25:41 THEN SHALL HE SAY ALSO UNTO THEM ON THE LEFT HAND DEPART FROM ME YOU CURSED INTO EVERLASTING FIRE PREPARED FOR THE devil and his angels, and the incident here, with the angel of one of the seven churches, are two separate events. ll Timothy 2:15
  • Anne on Matthew 25 - 8 years ago
We should share our gifts and talents with others 1 Peter 4:10 tells us "As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another; as good stewards of the manifold grace of God".
  • Evangelist Andrew Kelly on Matthew 25 - 8 years ago
We are taking about taking oil, that oil is the words of the King Jame bible in order to keep our light shining in Christ Jesus the Son of God. I see many foolish Christians of the hour looking for water and no oil to extinguish the lamp of the words of the Gospel of Christ.

Ephesians 5:[8] For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:

"And five of them were wise, and five foolish." The *wise (having the power of discerning and judging properly as to what is true or right, and conducting oneself thereby) are those Blessed, which when the Lord comes shall find so doing; and the *foolish (moron; a person who is notably stupid or lacking in good judgment) who neglected the truth and had no *enthusiasm (possession by God within).

Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this , To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world. James 1:27
  • Insight777 on Matthew 25 - 8 years ago
What men say is Holy on earth is open to their religious interpretation. Some religions say something is Holy when others say it is not. Fact or fiction, that "holiness" does exist, lie or truth, all deal with people that do not agree. Physical response to what is spiritual belief is what Jesus taught against. Jesus wants people to believe truth but to not kill people that do not understand truth.

I'm sure that some are really getting annoyed by now with some of my input; but how can someone just be quiet, when there's so much misinformation and wrong notions about interpreting the Scriptures? We should AVOID getting into a habit of imagination and spiritualism, to substitute for real understanding; which only comes from God's Spirit, over time and maturity through proof of trial and faith.
  • SeaHorse on Matthew 25 - 8 years ago
I agree with Irene that the oil is the Holy Spirit. But who are them that sell? I think it is the Prophets, the scribes of the Word, for in them is knowledge, which begets good works, which begets wisdom, which begets good life choices, which begets contentment from God which is of the Holy Spirit. If in this life, you can aquire to yourself blessings from God, this is the Holy Spirit.oil/lite

Believers will give an account of their stewardship on earth when at the judgement seat of Christ. James Hollandsworth has a very helpful message on this passage entitled, " Parables of Talents and Pounds " in his series Rightly Dividing the Parables.

  • Peter A. Okebukola on Matthew 25 - 8 years ago
The message that rings throughout this chapter is that we should be ever ready for we know not when the Lord shall come. Readiness means being in a state where we can qualify for the Lord's Kingdom. Readiness means being at the centre of God's Will all the time. We cannot achieve this state by our power or might but by the Grace of God. Salvation is through Grace.

I think we must always live our life preparing for the return of Jesus.
  • Irene123 on Matthew 25 - 9 years ago
The 'oil' is the symbolic of the Holy Ghost: being prayed up in the spirit everyday - and that is not referring to Jesus' 'example' prayer in Matt. - "Our Father which art in Heaven ..... "; repeating this everyday as one's 'prayer life' is tatamount to saying the rosary. We are to 'converse' with Him Just as we'd talk to our earthly fathers about our needs and/or just how much we love Him.

Ezekiel 33:7 So thou, O son of man, I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel therefore thou shalt hear the word at my mouth, and warn them from me. Matthew 25:13 Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh. Mark 13:33 Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is. Mark 13:35 Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning: Mark 13:37 And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch. Luke 12:38 And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants. Luke 21:36 Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man. 1 Peter 4:7 But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.

Cosmos, we cannot be firm in the Lord with our might. He is strong we are weak. Talk to the Lord stating your problem. Tell Him you have to help me because I cannot do it. Tell Him, you have to do it. You have to make it work in me. He loves to cleanse in our inner man. He works in our spirits for our purification. Trust Him. He will do it! God Bless!

Matthew 25:32 And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: Matthew 25:33 And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. Matthew 25:34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: Matthew 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
