What are we supposed to do on the sabbath?

    Greetings

Exodus 20:8-11 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: 10But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: 11For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it."

Ephesians 3:6 This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.

Galatians 3:28-29 There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed and heirs according to the promise.

Hello Audrey. I wasn't sure whether you were asking this question from a Jewish or a Christian standpoint, since we hear from folk of other non-Christian faiths as well. If from a Jewish standpoint, then as those who are given the Ten Commandments and therefore are under the Law, they have very clear rules of Sabbath observance. And these rules are interspersed in the Books of Exodus (chaps 16, 20, 31, 35), Leviticus (chaps 16, 23, 25), Numbers (chaps 15, 28), & Deuteronomy (chap 5).

However, from a Christian (both saved Jew & Gentile) standpoint, then the Mosaic Law with its requirements & penalties have no bearing at all upon the believer in Christ. For the converted Jew, he has been freed from the bondage to the Law that only revealed sin (which could give absolutely no salvific benefit); and for the converted Gentile, he has been freed from the burden of sin that he realized had a grip on his life & found no salvation in anything he tried to rid himself of it. So, both the unsaved Jew & Gentile had to come under the mighty influence of God's Spirit to realize that neither the Law nor any attempt to unburden the sin & guilt that he carried could free him.

Even as the Apostle Paul, who was a high-ranking Pharisee at one point, could now say as a freed follower of Christ Jesus: "There is therefore now no condemnation (i.e. by the Law & God our Judge) to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death (i.e. the whole Mosaic Law)." ( Romans 8:1,2). As believers in Christ, we no longer are bound to the Law but to God's Spirit Who instructs us according to "the righteousness of the Law".

Yet, on the Lord's Day, which we, as the early Church worshiped, should respect the day as unto the Lord and use our time wisely in Church attendance, meeting with others, and thinking deeply & talking about the things of the Lord. Blessings.
