Dpaulw. I believe that Jeremiah 10:1-5 does speak about idolatry, which indicates that they worshiped the work of their hands. The idolaters deck out their tree with silver and gold, but verse 5 tells us that these trees cannot speak, must be carried & cannot move; neither can they do good or evil. Why would a tree be set up and decorated and then the prophet speaks about the inabilities of the tree? Simply because the idol (the tree) is set up for a purpose - an idol to be worshiped - all of man's doing. We also get information on this type of behavior in Psalms 115:4-8 and Isaiah 44:13-17. What we read in these verses do not describe those who set up a Xmas tree; i.e. this tree is not idolized nor worshiped.
Their origins might appear dubious, and the reasons or need for such a tree to remember our Lord's Birth mystifying, but can one truly find any Scripture to show such an act as sinful? As mentioned earlier, I don't recognize or celebrate Xmas (or Easter) as I don't see any biblical warrant to do so, and participating at the Lord's Table is sufficient for me for a corporate remembrance of His Coming & Work of Salvation. Yet, for those who do recognize the day, I do not find any biblical authority to condemn them and they will have to judge for themselves the correct understanding and practise of this occasion. As well, I don't believe that Romans 12:2 and 2 Corinthians 6:17 can be applied here. What was in the apostle's mind seems to be of greater import than a Xmas tree being set up.
Thanks Dpaulw for your reply. I do share some of your beliefs on this, but not all. You referenced Jeremiah 10:1-8 & Galatians 4:9-11. This would fit perfectly if believers today who set up a tree, fell down before it to worship it. As did the idolaters of old who held the planetary heavens & their signs in high regard, or Galatian believers who reverted back into bondage of observance of times, etc. So, the question is not of idol worship at the tree or anything else associated with them, but how relevant and useful is such observance to the Christian life and experience.
And that is why I stated that cultural Christianity can at times supersede biblical Christianity. What may have begun as pagan worship and a false Christianity practised is not necessarily the same meaning and observance it is today. Okay, in Jeremiah 10:9, we have a description of those given to idolatry & the extent the heathen go to to beautify their idols (maybe finding more merit by giving the idols extra honour). Such was their efforts to glorify their idols, that even their clothing was the finest ('blue & purple' - which the common man could never afford), as they worked meticulously in their wicked craft & were very skilful at it ("cunning men").
I don't believe we can equate the colour of their clothing to anything sinister today. Some of course wish to show off their outward appearance & wealth, but the purity of one's heart & holy lives are of greater worth in the sight of God.

God did not come from anywhere. He has existed always. He had no beginning and will never ceases to be. This is why He gave Moses His name as "I AM WHO I AM" or "I WILL BE WHO I WILL BE" which speaks to being everlasting, eternal, being self-existent. This means that God is Life Itself. His existence is derived only from Himself, not having acquired life or existence outside of Himself. Existence is internally Who He Is. In many places in the Scriptures God speaks of Himself as the Eternal God, Everlasting Father, Everlasting to Everlasting, ( Isaiah 63:16; 1 Chronicles 16:36; 29:10; Psalm 41:13; 90:2; Isaiah 9:6; 40:26; Psalm 93:2; Genesis 21:33; Jeremiah 10:10, etc.)
We are to understand by these Scriptures that God always IS eternally so. He alone has this eternal existence, that is why He alone is the only true God. Hope this helps.

Interestingly in Michigan the Northern winds blow, it feels like bitter coldness inside, freezing your nose inside like icicles, even through your clothing layers. In Southern California when the " Santa Ana winds" dry & hot, dusty, both very district & unpleasant. The winds that blow East from the Pacific Ocean even summertime bring cool, unpleasant chills as early evening approaches. Etc. (In some personal observation of distinct winds.)

I don't believe we can equate the colour of their clothing to anything sinister today. Some of course wish to show off their outward appearance & wealth, but the purity of one's heart & holy lives are of greater worth in the sight of God.

Yet, many live in fear of when their end may come. For the one who has put his/her trust in the Lord Jesus, death brings no fear - has no sting. It's simply a transition from this life to the one God has prepared for those who love Him. Many over the years welcomed death at the hands of their tormentors: the wicked one might have vented his anger against the Christian, but the Christian looked beyond to the welcoming Arms of the One Who first laid down His Life for him.
