  • Why the Romans broke legs of Crucifixion victims - In Reply on John 20:22 - 3 years ago
    John 19:33

But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:

    John 19:32

Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him.

    John 19:31

The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

    >>When the Romans finally wanted their crucified victims to die, they broke the prisoner's legs so they could no longer push themselves up and all the body weight would be hanging by the arms.

Crucifixion may be defined as a method of execution by which a person is hanged, usually by their arms, from a cross or similar structure until dead. ... The postulated causes of death include cardiovascular, respiratory, metabolic, and psychological pathology.

The Crucifixion of Jesus guaranteed a horrific, slow, painful death. As the strength of the muscles of Jesus' lower limbs tired, the weight of His body had to be transferred to His wrists, His arms, and His shoulders. Within a few minutes of being placed on the Cross, Jesus' shoulders were dislocated.

    Hi Scott.

We tend to try and fit 3 days and 3 nights in between Friday to Sunday When Jesus rose from the grave. The reason for this is we know by scripture they wanted to get them off the cross because it was the preparation. and the sabbath was following. But it wasn't the day of sabbaths, it was the ( High sabbath ) that they was concerned about. It came earlier in the week. placing it sometime around Wednesday before 6pm. Ending 5:59 pm Thursday. "Their days are 6:01 to 5:59 As our days are 12:01 to 11:59."

"The High sabbath is one of the annual sabbaths, not the sabbath of days.Which is Saturday and can fall on any day".

They had 2 Sabbaths that week first the high sabbath, "annual" and the days of sabbath, "Saturday"

    Note:

John 19:31. The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (FOR THAT SABBATH DAY WAS AN HIGH DAY,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

So that would account for the 3 days and 3 nights and Jesus rising on Sunday morning, which starts 6:01 pm. "On our clock this would be Saturday" On their clock it's Sunday.

    Note:

John 20:1. THE FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK COMETH MARY MAGDALENE EARLY, WHEN IT WAS YET DARK, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.

Not sure how accurate but we are in the vicinity.

I hope this helps God bless.
  • The Judas Prophesy - In Reply on John 19 - 3 years ago
Prophesy written by King David hundreds of years prior: said Judas would betray Jesus; so, As being the Word of God (on earth), Jesus knew this would happen just as it did.

"Even my own familiar friend in whom I trusted, Who ate my bread, Has lifted up his heel against me."( Psalm 41:9 NKJV)

Judas knew who Jesus was. Yet he still did it. The hour of shadows.
  • Fern Henley - In Reply on John 19 - 3 years ago
Judas denied Him? Refused to chose to wait 72 hours for Him to come out of the cave! Could he have repented as darkness closed his brain? Did a light appear giving him another chance to accept the love of Creator? I remember the death struggle of an avowed atheist, if only I could have gone to her enfolded her in my arms. I believe Creator knows she did the best she could in her life.

    Carry Lennert,

I'm not sure what you are working on, this is not to cause debate, I hope you don't mind if I may give some information that may help you on your search. You say they did not know at sundown and that is when Joseph took His body. Jesus was crucified on the Passover day, 14 th of Nisan, which was a preparation day for the Feast of Unleavened Bread 15 th - 21 st, which the first day is a holy convocation. That is a sabbath day that the only work you could do is to prepare food to eat. There were two Sabbaths, Friday and Saturday John called it a high day ( John 19:31). ( Exodus 12:3-11) ( Leviticus 23:5-7), ( Numbers 33:1-3)

They had to get Jesus down and in the tomb, before the sun went down, when the sun goes down it starts the next day, the 15 th that started the feast of Unleavened Bread the night they ate the Passover which the first day is a Sabbath. ( Matthew 27:46-50) ( Mark 15:34-37) ( Luke 23:52-56) ( John 19:30-31). The ninth hour is 3 to 4 PM, The preparation and Sabbath they are talking about, the 14 th Passover day, the 15 th, the first day of the feast that will start at sundown.

It may seem a long time from 3 PM to 7 PM but look at what happened after Jesus gave up the ghost, people went to Pilate to partition that the bodies be taken down. He sent the soldiers to go and break their legs at would take a while before they would die. The reason they broke their legs was they could not push up with their legs so they could breathe, so they die of asphyxia.

After that Joseph of Arimathaea went to Pilate asking for Jesus' body, Nicodemus, a Pharisee that first met Jesus at night not wanting to be seen, brought the spices for the burial. When Joseph of Arimathaea went to Pilate he did not believe Jesus was dead already, he even sent for the centurion to verify Jesus had died that quickly. You would think 6 hours would be long enough. ( Mark 15:44-45).

I hope this little amount of information will help, 2000 characters are short.

What was the time of day when Jesus was baptized?

What was the time of day when Jesus gave up the ghost?

Are these two dates 42 months apart, to the minute?

Jamie, may CHRIST IN US grace us with HIS wisdom and HIS understanding.

Revelation 6:9 And when he had opened the sixth seal....

Jesus is telling (not literally) the saints in the Old testament (those described in Hebrews 11) to wait a while longer and they would be glorified at his resurrection.

    Revelation 6:12 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;

    This fulfils the prophecy in:

Joel 2:31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible DAY OF THE LORD come.

The DAY OF THE LORD came when Christ was crucified and resurrected.

Matthew 27:45 Now from the sixth hour was there darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.

Matthew 27:51 ...And the earth did quake ....

John 19:34 ....And forthwith came there out blood...

Matthew 27:52 And the graves were opened, and many bodies of the (old Testament) saints which slept AROSE,

Matthew 27:53 And came out of the grave after HIS RESURRECTION, and went into the holy city (new Jerusalem), and appeared to many.

This is the one hundred and forty four thousand that are sealed in Revelation 7.

Revelation 8:1 And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour.

    This fulfils the prophecy in:

Daniel 12:11 And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away (Christ replaced it with his death) and the abomination that maketh DESOLATE (Jesus had to become your life) set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days (42 months, Christ ministry on earth).

Daniel 12:12 Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days.

There was 45 days of silence between Christ Resurrection and Pentecost then the Holy Spirit was poured out on man (Christ second coming).

I think Nicodemus was probably with the crowd on Golgotha when Jesus was crucified. I think he knew that this was all scripture and prophesy being fulfilled. On that day over 100 prophesies were completed.

Google, Charts of fulfilled prophesies by Jesus.

There are charts on Old Testament, and New Testament Prophesies.

It is amazing!!!! One person did all that with His life. And yet people can still deny Him.

Pray against Spiritual Blindness and Deafness. For ears to be open to hear the truth; for eyes to see the words on the pages of the Bible. For understanding.
  • Robby B. on John 19 - 3 years ago
Nicodemus means valorous leader. Yet he met secretly with Christ Jesus prior to Calvary. This while his disciples openly contemplate their position in his reign.

Now sacrificed for our sins, it is Nicodemus, who openly serves the Lord, while his disciple hide/ forsake him.

I believe that Nicodemus is saved, born again, in heaven with our Lord Jesus Christ!

    Hi Paul,

Notice that what you said in your sentence is not what Matthew 5:18 says. The verse says 'til all be fulfilled' not 'end of time' as you said.

The Bible says Jesus came to earth to fulfil the law. Hover or click on this for proof: Matthew 5:17. Note that Jesus came after the Israelites and after the Old Testament was written.

Jesus's mission was to die for the sins of the world. John 3:16

Notice that after Jesus completed his mission he said 'it is finished': John 19:30.

So, Jesus fulfilled the law. People had lots of laws then including Israelites who had nearly 1000 laws, not just moral, but civil and ceremonial. They were huge in number and governed themselves like a country.

However, even though Jesus fulfilled the law, we are still obligated to follow the moral law. John 14:15. Example: do not kill, lie, cheat, worship false gods, commit sexual immorality, blasphemy, etc.

They did stoning back then. Public stonings are still done today in places in the middle east.

The Bible does not instruct Christians to stone anyone. One must differentiate what is moral law that applies to 'me' and what was a civil or ceremonial law that only applied to a people group at that time. Israelites were God's chosen people so they were given different attention than others as well.

If it's Grace you receive today, But becomes a debt tomorrow then it never was Grace.

It would be more like an I owe you .

John 19:30. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said,

IT IS FINISHED: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

Now we believe and receive Him.

I had the same thought in Isaiah 55:1- I was reminded in John 19:28 when Jesus says "I Thirst". Something on the inside of me said He is thirsting after Righteousness, thirsting after the living God, thirsting for the Living God but realizing He (God) is in Him(Jesus)..so He (Jesus) was missing that once was in Him

The one True God, Yahweh is spelled with a capital G, not a lower case g. And furthermore, God exists is three persons as stated in 1 John 5:7 quotes, "For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one."

Genesis 1:26, "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth."

Notice how the Triune God is mentioned several times by references plural pronouns such as us and our; describing the Trijne Godhead.

Mark 12:36-37 quotes, "For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The LORD said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool. David therefore himself calleth him Lord; and whence is he then his son? And the common people heard him gladly."

John 1-5 quotes, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

John 1:14 quotes, "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth."

John 19:30 quotes, "When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost."

John 15:26-27 quotes, "But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning."

The Father, Yahweh is God, Jesus is God, and the Holy Spirit is God. They are the same person.

The identity of the "officers" recorded in John 18:3 (continued) =

3rd, the officer that "struck JESUS" (v.22) was just "one of the officers" in this plurality. He was in the close and immediate presence, company, and service of the High Priest (v.19). This officer was a Jew because the high priest would not have allowed a Gentile Roman military soldier (officer) in such close quarters for fear of ceremonial defilement (v.28).

Ironically, this officer and his fellow officers may have previously voiced another opinion concerning CHRIST: "Never man spoke like This Man" ( Jn. 7:46).

4th, the officer that struck JESUS (v.22) was a Jew because he thought JESUS disrespected the high priest. A Gentile Roman military officer would consider this confrontation a trivial insult between Jews and would not bother inserting himself in such matters.

5th, the Jews greatly feared potential ceremonial defilement during the Passover (v.28). Therefore, they exercised great care to avoid Gentile contact. These officers were Jews because contact was not a defilement issue (see vv. 3, 12, 18, and 22).

6th, John 19:6 clearly prove the nationality of these officers as Jews. There, the verse implies the officers stand with the chief priests and join their murderous rage demanding Pilate to crucify CHRIST.

7th, Roman military personnel simply would not serve the Jews by accomplishing or enforcing their religious mandates. Rather the reverse would occur. When CHRIST said, "Whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain" ( Mt. 5:41), HE referred to Gentile Roman officials who abused their authority by oppressing the Jews into menial governmental service, usually by delivering posts and dispatches, or by forcing Jews to carry their military and personal packs and equipment. Forcing Simon of Cyrene to bear CHRIST's cross is a Scriptural example of such compelling ( Mt. 27:32; Mk. 15:21; Lu. 23:26).

We see the beauty & richness of his Gospel coming through as a result of that intimacy & impartation of Divine Truths John enjoyed & received.

  • Setting Things in Order - In Reply on John 19:17 - 4 years ago
Paul left Titus in Crete to lay a foundation for a Christian church planting there. He instructs him in choices of what kind of men to assist him.

Set IN ORDER according to the known Will of God, by Jesus Christ.

I haven't looked up the history of this moment, but you can. Put the BOOK OF TITUS in Google, then type: history after it. Look through the first 5 responses.

There's another story where a king is told, set thine house in order; you're going to die. He repents and lives longer.

So you can put that phrase into this websites: SEARCH BOX. Set in order. All scriptures with that phrase will be fetched by the search engine. It helps us study deeper, God who is a God of order.

Satan is a "god" of CHAOS. Whatever he finds that is in order, he tears at it until it's in sin and disarray. That is his FRUIT. He has many! Get to know all of them. That's how we know he's trying to set our homes, work, friendships, etc, in Chaos. Time to pray and get Church members to pray with us, if need be.

Let's be sensitive to order vs chaos. It's a pattern for success or, chaos. Titus learned that traveling with Paul: as did the Disciples that traveled with Jesus.

Job had a great life until Chaos showed up on the scene. Job had to resist blaming God for it. He learned the blessing of trusting God, despite the mess around him and "friends" that ACCUSED him of some secret sin.

Accuser, is another name of Satan. We all need to pay attention to the signs of his presence. Stay in the Bible and even READ IT OUT LOUD. He doesn't want to hear it. Praise, and sing Jesus Loves Me if that's all you can think of, in the "battle."

When Jesus was facing a battle, He got away from the crowd and Prayed. Always. That's our Example.

    Hope this helped you. Mishael

Galatians Chapter Four has a lot of wonder in regard to freedom in Christ Jesus.

    Verses 21-31

Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law?

For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.

But, he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise.

Which things are an allegory: for these are the two convenants, the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar.

For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.

But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.

For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath a husband.

Now we, brethern, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.

But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.

Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.

So then, brethern, we are not children of the bondwoman, but children of the free.
