Just thought I'd reach out in case there is any direction or specific questions I can answer. I have had a lot of time at my disposal; I'm not sure if that will continue as much in the near term with time at my rural retreat and if and when I start work again here in a couple weeks. I do have internet elsewhere that I can access but not WIFI and I haven't figured out how to write comments on my cell phone. I am still up in the air if I will stay more or less permanently up there once the electric is on and come back here occasionally or vice versa. I appreciate prayer on that; and am thankful there has been a delay of a week or so until things are ready so hopefully I can see what transpires in the world scene the next few days; although I'd rather not think about it. I am happy that I was able to spread what has been on my heart hopefully from the Lord and no matter what happens with the online availability let us meditate day and night ( Joshua 1:8). Let the Word be in our hearts to give the hope to others; in and out of season ( 2 Tim. 4:2).

You mention that you can't fall off a roof you are not on. That is true. You also cannot fall off a roof if you and are permanently secured to an anchor point. Sure, I can unhook myself and jump off, but I use the word permanently because Christ has sealed me with His Spirit, and that is permanent. I'm permanently secured to Christ and can never be separated from Him. If I decide to walk away, He goes with me because He says He will never leave me nor forsake me.
There are three verses I must consider, Deuteronomy 31:6, 31:8, Joshua 1:5, and Hebrews 13:5. These verses tell me that Jesus will never leave me nor forsake me. Sure, you might say I can leave Him, but if I leave, where does Christ go? Will He leave me? I must take Him at His word.
Now here's how great the Greek text is. In Hebrews 13:5, it says "I will never leave thee nor forsake thee." What a beautiful statement. What a beautiful promise. You see, here's something we don't get from our English text, but in the Greek text, just in this statement alone, there are 5 negatives.
The word never represents two negatives. Whenever a writer in Greek uses two negatives, he's talking about an impossibility. Jesus says, "I will never," in other words, it will be impossible for Me to leave you. And then He says, "Nor forsake you." Now the word forsake comes with three negatives, so this gives us the five negatives. The only way a person can lose salvation is if Christ leaves them, and that's never going to happen according to Him.

This verse shows that God's presence is continuous and sustaining - you don't need to "keep the fire burning on your own." God promises to be present every day, like a lamp that never goes out.
If we draw a parallel, we can see the connection between oil, lamp, constant fire, and God's presence. In the tabernacle, the priests were instructed to keep the lamp burning continually ( Exodus 27:20-21). The oil represented God's Spirit; the flame, His enduring presence.
Likewise, in Joshua's life - and in ours - God Himself is the source of the flame. We are not alone in trying to preserve our strength or spiritual fervor. The fire of His presence is not dependent on our own might, but on His unchanging promise: "I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee."
Let His presence be your oil, your light, your fire - constant, sustaining, and faithful.

Where it says, "let your conversation," it's literally a statement, the manner of life. The manner of life is without covetousness;
Whether you apply it to the track star, or to walking with Christ, it's all the same. The manner of life of the believer is without covetousness, which literally means without a love for money. The love for money is not even part of the Christian life.
And be content, literally, while being content, and there's actually two different directions here, staying away from covetousness, while at the same time being content with such things as you have: for he has said, a quote from Deuteronomy 31:6, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. This quote is from Genesis 28:15, Deuteronomy 31:6 and Joshua 1:5.
I will never leave thee nor forsake thee. This quote actually has 5 negatives in it. Number one, I will never leave thee. The word never represents two negatives. We certainly are seeing leaders and sin in general becoming ripe for judgment; and with it we should expect the Antichrist understanding occult language to rise up soon.
In Israel we see rapid destruction of those in surrounding nations who foster different factions attempting to destroy Israel.
It is accelerating the eventual prophecy of Psalm 83 to completion which allows the initial expansion of the land with further expansion after the Ezekiel 38 war that leads to Armageddon. Isaiah 26:15 says You have increased the nation, O LORD, You have increased the nation; You are glorified; You have expanded all the borders of the land. (New KJ version; regular says to ends of the earth at the end of the verse). This could signify two events where the land eventually is gained from the EUPHRATES river to the sea (Mediterranean); this of course is beyond what the Muslims claim they will take over from the Jordan river to the sea. Joshua 1:4 states: From the wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast.
Meanwhile; we have the nearness of World War 3 looming; and today Donald Trump also talked with Zelinsky and he of course is pressing him to settlement; as opposed to all the military expenditures and long range weapons now promised by this administration after they stated 2 years ago that would be precisely something leading to World War 3 and they wouldn't do it.

Concluding thoughts for now on the discussion of determining priority of importance of particular scriptures.
God; in His infinite wisdom created us all in different ways whether in our original fallen nature or after we are "born again".
We are all interdependent; so there needs to be interaction along with our life spent in solitude with the Lord devoting time to prayer; study of the Word and just listening to God. Without purposely trying to make things even more confusing; I would propose that the Word is structured with a lot of seemingly unimportant details; genealogies and stories that in time help us to piece together the whole picture of God's Providence and hence bring out in the Word and ultimately in our own lives things which become part of us as we meditate on the Lord day and night ( Joshua 1:8). A wise guide will likely lead a new convert to the Gospels; then commonly to Paul's Epistles before getting into the Old Testament in detail (one exception being the Creation and fall of man in the start of Genesis). This is good advice for a nonbeliever but we should not be constrained to this plan for someone; for instance truly seeking out God's truths in places like Revelation or perhaps some of the Old Testament prophets. In fact for a person of Jewish heritage it is probably best as several evangelists do in Israel today (Zev Porat as one example) to go directly to the Old Testament first (especially the taboo passage in Isaiah 53.)
These days; of course we can't assume any of the doctrines which a couple generations ago were never or hardly ever questioned are still held. These include but not necessarily limited to the inerrancy of God; the physical reality of an eternal heaven and hell; God's promises to national Israel still being valid today; the Millennial reign; or PreMillennial Pretribulation rapture. Admittedly these last three subjects were throughout much of the Reformed era and in Catholic traditions before that not believed.
My last two posts were a general look at accuracy of historical and more recent information as seen through the media and historical accounts. A realistic view of the Bible sees it set apart as having all things necessary for instruction; rebuke; etc as 2 Timothy 3:16 states. We often use other sources such as Foxe's Book of Martyrs to fill in the details; and most of us have the idea that all but one of the original Apostles was martyred. The scripture only mentions James the brother of John killed in Acts 12:2. We can assess from the writings of Paul that he knew his time of departure was at hand; but Acts 28 stops short of his martyrdom. From Christ's words to Peter in John 21:18 as to his fate of martyrdom as well. Whether John in Revelation was boiled in oil unsuccessfully before his Patmos exile is not as far as I know proven.
Often we CAN read into what is not said in scripture. Jesus was basically left out of anything but a bare bones description of his time before His minstry began after John the Baptist baptised Him. I would imagine he was perfect in being a carpenter and all that it entailed but we just need to understand that He fulfilled the law perfectly in His life and ultimately His death.
When we look at Christ's personal prayer life in particular; we see that He knew the importance of withdrawing before certain events and praying all night at times; as He did before picking the Disciples; as well as fasting and prayer which He likely did both practices before upbraiding those who didn't remain proactive in general to be spiritually strong at the casting out of the demon in Matthew 17:21. We don't see ANY indication that any of the Apostles or Disciples prayed before the Resurrection. It doesn't prove it didn't happen but certainly indicates it was probably very deficient.
The Bible clearly does NOT put people but God on display. Even mourning for Moses had to end ( Joshua 1:2).
The usual approach to this subject is to cite a resource that is available; such as the very well known "Daily Bread" devotions; to convicting ones (Oswald Chambers being my favorite). When undergoing a determination as to use of a particular daily reading we must be diligent to ascertain that the scriptures themselves are being studied in the proper context and the focus isn't on side subjects such as frilly sentiments that deliberately cherry pick for things to put us in a good mood and ignore the weightier scriptures. We should also make a realistic commitment to set apart a certain amount of time daily which of course may vary according to spiritual maturity; and the other things the Lord has in our life that is required of us.
Ultimately; we should learn to be workmen that are approved ( 2 Tim. 2:15) and meditate on the Word day and night ( Joshua 1:8). If it goes into our brain and leaves as soon as we enter into a different task then we haven't allowed it to transform us.
Even if we use devotionals that are generally sound scripturally; there is always an exception that pops up at times; where it appears a statement is being made that is not scripturally in line with what we were taught. We need to be aware and Bereans.
Part of what we must do is allow ourselves not to be held fast to certain things that are neither right or wrong but what we have become accustomed to. This includes verse headings (arbitrarily chosen much of the time to make translations clear in our language); the order of scripture (Job probably being the oldest book or at least as old as Genesis); and not being obsessive on a particular translation (such as KJV only adherents). That being said we must avoid obvious spurious translations and be aware that there are issues with any translation. KJV I would say is better in general as to holding to proper context with Christ's Divinity than some other renditions with a few isolated words in passages.
Hello Rjgil4769. There are many portions in the Bible, where we find that God promises to protect His people Israel. However, Israel, in their often disobedience & idolatry suffered much under God's Hand & were punished & given into the hands of their enemies. Yet, God's harsh dealings with them were to bring them back to Him, that they would reject all other gods & cleave only to Him. But suffer they did, but how long will it take for Israel to realize that they still spurn God's Love by rejecting Him & His Messiah Who came to redeem them? For this, Israel still suffers & will continue to do so until their eyes are opened & they shall see Him come in the clouds, "they also which pierced Him" ( Revelation 1:7)
Here are some Scriptures of God's care & promise to Israel: Genesis 12:1-3; Joshua 1:1-6; Psalm 83:1-18 (noting Asaph's appeal to God against those nations confederate against Israel. That all men might know the LORD' Name is Yahweh - not Allah); Psalm 122:6,7; Isaiah 41:8-16; Ezekiel chaps 38 & 39 (still future); Zechariah 2:8,9; Zechariah 12:2-9 (still future).
And we also see God's protection over Israel even after the birth of the Jewish State in May 1948: soon after this, five Arab armies (Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon & Iraq) came against a small Israeli opposition & were resoundly defeated. 1967 (six-day war) where Egypt, Jordan, Syria & Lebanon) attacked Israel to wipe them off the map. They were not only defeated by Israel but Israel captured the Sinai, Golan Heights, Gaza & the West Bank. 1973 (on Yom-Kippur), Egyptian & Syrian forces attacked Israel on this holy day (Day of Atonement). Once again Israel was able to defeat this surprise attack against them with the help of U.S. forces. And 2016, in December, a mysterious storm cloud (of dust and rain) put a barrier between Israel and ISIS. Reports say the storm stopped on the border of Syria and ISIS was 'unable' to enter Israel's Golan Heights area. God has not forgotten Israel.

We are in the "Church Age" at this point; and heading toward the final version of the "Revived Roman Empire" as seen in Daniel 2:42-44. The final composite kingdom of the Antichrist is like a lion (Babylonian symbol but modern day Great Britain); a bear (Media Persian symbol also Russia) a leopard (fitting into the Greek or Mediterranean Kingdom); and the final composite Beast of the last days which encompasses the entire earth ( Daniel 7:2-8). This will come eventually with the Antichrist for "one hour" (probably the 7 Year Tribulation) taking over a kingdom of 10 Kings who are yet to have a kingdom ( Revelation 17:12).
Since nations are still mentioned in verses about the Millennium ( Psalm 86:9 as one example) coming to the Lord it is clear they are in God's design to be restored. For now; territorial integrity is important; although God will have to settle many disputes when He comes ( Isaiah 2:4).
God has established through the Abrahamic covenant and other promises to Joshua and Caleb that He would give the 12 Tribes inheritance of all the territory described from the "Great Sea" to the Euphrates ( Joshua 1:4). God does honor covenants though; so agreements made with those in other nations or even Israel itself say with settlements should be honored.
We also need to keep in mind Joshua 5:14 where the Angel of the Lord states He is for the Lord's army not necessarily siding with anyone. This is why God allowed Israel's enemies to prosper at times for chastisement; as was made clear in God's prophecies about Babylon and even the pagan invaders stated this (although I can't find the verse at present). It is humbling to think about this at present; we in our proud nation think the worst thing to happen would be invasion from another nation and submission but are we better than Israel and the Babylonians? This may happen before the Tribulation if He tarries (our borders are already breached BTW). Food for thought.

Hello Negandjo. I don't know the answer to the question you have given, but if I might make an assumption. Are you referring to the two men that Joshua sent to spy out Jericho and these men arrived at the house of Rahab, the harlot?
If that is your question (from Joshua 2:1), then it was Joshua who took the initiative to send out the spies, based upon what the LORD had commanded him to do (in Joshua 1:2). I don't think that Joshua knew about Rahab, as nothing was known about this city or the new territory they were about to enter & conquer. And the two spies themselves, may not even have known much about Rahab. We can only guess about this; my thought is that Rahab probably ran some sort of inn, as well as being a woman of ill repute (or, maybe she once was such a person, but the stigma stuck with her & attached to her name). So the two spies probably took whatever accommodation they could easily get - it just happened to belong to Rahab & God had planned this & subsequently used Rahab to help Joshua & Israel overcome the city. And after the city was razed to the ground & all living were killed, Rahab & her family members were spared as promised & taken out to live with God's people ( Joshua 6:23,25). Please consider reflecting on Psalm 91, Psalm 46, Psalm 139, John 16:33, John 15:5-6, Joshua 1:8-9.
I thought I would start out with when we don't fast. That would be for someone that has blood sugar issues (for lengthier fasts); or when we need physical strength for work or mental acumen to perform tasks.
I have stated the verse where Jesus casts out the demon where prayer and fasting were needed for that type of demon; thus the disciples couldn't cast it out ( Mark 9:29). It appears that Jesus expected the disciples to seek the Father through prayer as to the challenges to come; so that it could be revealed to them when fasting was needed. Christ of course had the power to do all things irregardless; but in His dependence on the Spirit so that He could "suffer all things as we did but without sin" ( Heb. 4:15) meant that He trusted in the Spirit for all of His miracles and actions.
Obviously; prayer is something we all should do constantly ( 1 Thess. 5:17). We are also to meditate day and night ( Joshua 1:8). We see how Christ was up all night in prayer before He picked His first group of Disciples; and how at the end the Disciples were to fight sleep due to sorrow ad exhaustion and pray to avoid temptation.
There is no set command for fasting; it appears to have been something the fear of God instigated for instance by the pagan king in Nineveh ( Jonah 3:7). Esther had a 3 day fast before appealing to the King to save her people and reveal her origin in chapter 4; verse 16. The King of Babylon fasted for a night when he was disturbed about Daniel being placed in the lion's den in Daniel 6. Churches these days probably do this much less often than should be done; certainly a short fast would be proper more often than long ones. There are health benefits as well; obviously one without water should be limited. It would seem that God intervened before 40 days without water in the case of Nineveh or it was a miracle they survived that long.
We are to be filled with the Spirit as we are emptied of ourselves.
So my conclusion is..to ask God for patience or chastisement...that can be left to everyone in their prayer closet.
Further thought here is how to process our "sanctification" so that we may learn from what God is teaching us in the process in real time. Here are some suggestions...
1. Preparing the journey with prayer. Prayer (thankfully) for such matters as asking God to discipline us can also be laden with requests for Him to bring those individuals in our life to guide us in wisdom and discipleship. We should be "proactive" in some sense by always having a mindset of prayer as well as "meditating on the Word day and night". ( Joshua 1:8). We can trust God's Word to give us counsel; wisdom and strength as well as words to respond to others. This; of course does NOT mean we hurl verses in our own anger about God destroying the wicked when we are annoyed with someone.
2. Learning from our mistakes. There needs to be both an avoidance of thinking we can predict the outcome of things based on our human wisdom of similar situations in the past. There are certainly cases where we can see manipulative individuals who are set on a course of action to constantly resist us. There are clearly some situations such as husbands and wives and their relationship that cannot be avoided. There are other cases where I have found it is prudent to be prepared for detours needed to avoid unnecessary time with those the enemy clearly has placed in our path as distractions. I am saying in general here that true guilt due to our own sin is different than imposed guilt of narcissists. In such cases our confidence needs to be in the Lord where the foundation is and the anchor of our souls ( Heb. 6:19). This is key to stand as a bulwark against the fiery darts of the enemy ( Eph. 6:16).
3. Working on a diary. There is some merit to keeping a written record for future use to indicate how we have progressed (or not) in our growth in the Lord.
The Psalm certainly reminds us of Satan's role as the "accuser of the brethren". This is recorded in the earliest texts of scripture in Job; and Genesis; and is seen in the still future events in Revelation 12. Since the word them and they seems to be the context of the Psalm there are certainly powers and principalities under Satan's rulership that would probably plan to work on people to search out "iniquities" and "inward thoughts" such as verse 6 show.
It would seem that perhaps in the final judgment at Armageddon the destruction of those who are blaspheming God and no doubt the saints as Satan himself is starting in Revelation 13 will cause some of the fear in verse 9 and the rejoicing in verse 10.
I have tended to look to future prophetic final fulfillments to be strongly suggested not only in Psalms but most of scripture. There are certainly many things applicable to David as this one (albeit not specifically mentioning any particular event in his life that inspired these words).
Looking at my "cheat sheet" from church a few years back there are many types of Psalms; the "lament" one has a title/intro.; complaint; promises (petition); A statement of trust and Praise. (Thanks to K. D. a former elder in my church who taught this study; guess I'm not allowed to mention names here).
At any rate; there is certainly some mystery as to the order of the Psalms (not chronological) and to just when and where certain types appear; also of course some run through multiple chapters with the same writing. There are acrostic patterns we can't see except in the original language. May these verses and all scripture be real to us as we meditate on the Word day and night ( Joshua 1:8).
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 exhort us to pray continually. We should note that giving thanksgiving and rejoicing in Christ are other factors. Meditating on the Word day and night ( Joshua 1:8) certainly would be the other principal act associated with answered prayers. This verse in greater detail gives the exhortation to DO the things in the Word; and gives the added benefit of prosperity and success. This causes us to look at Solomon's prayer for wisdom when God also gave Him what He DIDN'T ask for in terms of exceedingly great riches. 1 Kings 3:5-15 shows this coming to pass; but of course the later sins that Solomon committed despite being warned of God to avoid basically caused the downfall of Israel.
There are obvious guidelines of what to avoid in seeing answered prayer in the Book of James chapter 4. We should note that this passage can be broadly taken for ANY type of lust (sexual; power; material gain) that comes from the world; flesh or the Devil. This would be something that hopefully would be limited to new; immature believers or the prosperity preaching crowd.
There are a number of basic concepts that need to be covered here providing that we are at least attempting caution as to the warnings in James; including our character not being "double minded" for example; where a person is warned that they should expect nothing from God. (see James 4:8).
Fact One: The primary purpose of prayer should be for the sake of God's Kingdom. The most obvious conclusion should of course be in accordance with the Lord's Prayer that HIS will is done and His Kingdom comes; and that He gets all the power and glory. ( Matthew 6; Luke 11 version somewhat abbreviated). That prayer is written as a general concept of prayer; only asking for "daily bread" as a request for human needs. It is not to be rehearsed as a mantra.
Fact Two: Prayers need to be secondarily for the edification of the Body. (more in next section)

Just thought I'd reach out in case there is any direction or specific questions I can answer. I have had a lot of time at my disposal; I'm not sure if that will continue as much in the near term with time at my rural retreat and if and when I start work again here in a couple weeks. I do have internet elsewhere that I can access but not WIFI and I haven't figured out how to write comments on my cell phone. You mention that you can't fall off a roof you are not on. That is true. You also cannot fall off a roof if you and are permanently secured to an anchor point. Sure, I can unhook myself and jump off, but I use the word permanently because Christ has sealed me with His Spirit, and that is permanent. I'm permanently secured to Christ and can never be separated from Him. If I decide to walk away, He goes with me because He says He will never leave me nor forsake me.
There are three verses I must consider, Deuteronomy 31:6, 31:8, Joshua 1:5, and Hebrews 13:5. These verses tell me that Jesus will never leave me nor forsake me. Sure, you might say I can leave Him, but if I leave, where does Christ go? Will He leave me? I must take Him at His word.
Now here's how great the Greek text is. In Hebrews 13:5, it says "I will never leave thee nor forsake thee." What a beautiful statement. What a beautiful promise. You see, here's something we don't get from our English text, but in the Greek text, just in this statement alone, there are 5 negatives.
The word never represents two negatives. Whenever a writer in Greek uses two negatives, he's talking about an impossibility. Jesus says, "I will never," in other words, it will be impossible for Me to leave you. And then He says, "Nor forsake you." Now the word forsake comes with three negatives, so this gives us the five negatives. The only way a person can lose salvation is if Christ leaves them, and that's never going to happen according to Him.

This verse shows that God's presence is continuous and sustaining - you don't need to "keep the fire burning on your own." God promises to be present every day, like a lamp that never goes out.
If we draw a parallel, we can see the connection between oil, lamp, constant fire, and God's presence. In the tabernacle, the priests were instructed to keep the lamp burning continually ( Exodus 27:20-21). The oil represented God's Spirit; the flame, His enduring presence.
Likewise, in Joshua's life - and in ours - God Himself is the source of the flame. We are not alone in trying to preserve our strength or spiritual fervor. The fire of His presence is not dependent on our own might, but on His unchanging promise: "I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee."
Let His presence be your oil, your light, your fire - constant, sustaining, and faithful.
Hebrews 13:5 - Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
Where it says, "let your conversation," it's literally a statement, the manner of life. The manner of life is without covetousness;
Whether you apply it to the track star, or to walking with Christ, it's all the same. The manner of life of the believer is without covetousness, which literally means without a love for money. The love for money is not even part of the Christian life.
And be content, literally, while being content, and there's actually two different directions here, staying away from covetousness, while at the same time being content with such things as you have: for he has said, a quote from Deuteronomy 31:6, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. This quote is from Genesis 28:15, Deuteronomy 31:6 and Joshua 1:5.
I will never leave thee nor forsake thee. This quote actually has 5 negatives in it. Number one, I will never leave thee. The word never represents two negatives. When a writer in Greek uses two negatives, he's talking about an impossibility. I will never, it will be impossible for me to leave you. Nor forsake you. The word forsake comes with three negatives. Now the word leave means to leave upon someone else's request. And the word forsake means to leave upon his own prompting.

We certainly are seeing leaders and sin in general becoming ripe for judgment; and with it we should expect the Antichrist understanding occult language to rise up soon.
In Israel we see rapid destruction of those in surrounding nations who foster different factions attempting to destroy Israel.
It is accelerating the eventual prophecy of Psalm 83 to completion which allows the initial expansion of the land with further expansion after the Ezekiel 38 war that leads to Armageddon. Isaiah 26:15 says You have increased the nation, O LORD, You have increased the nation; You are glorified; You have expanded all the borders of the land. (New KJ version; regular says to ends of the earth at the end of the verse). This could signify two events where the land eventually is gained from the EUPHRATES river to the sea (Mediterranean); this of course is beyond what the Muslims claim they will take over from the Jordan river to the sea. Joshua 1:4 states: From the wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast.
Meanwhile; we have the nearness of World War 3 looming; and today Donald Trump also talked with Zelinsky and he of course is pressing him to settlement; as opposed to all the military expenditures and long range weapons now promised by this administration after they stated 2 years ago that would be precisely something leading to World War 3 and they wouldn't do it.
Remember there has to be some peace established at the first seal and it is likely it will be well in the works before that so that the conditions will be conducive to lead to the fulfillment of the CONFIRMING of the covenant (preexisting most likely already) of the Dan. 9:27 pact.

I stand in agreement with the believers petition before God.
God; in His infinite wisdom created us all in different ways whether in our original fallen nature or after we are "born again".
We are all interdependent; so there needs to be interaction along with our life spent in solitude with the Lord devoting time to prayer; study of the Word and just listening to God. Without purposely trying to make things even more confusing; I would propose that the Word is structured with a lot of seemingly unimportant details; genealogies and stories that in time help us to piece together the whole picture of God's Providence and hence bring out in the Word and ultimately in our own lives things which become part of us as we meditate on the Lord day and night ( Joshua 1:8). A wise guide will likely lead a new convert to the Gospels; then commonly to Paul's Epistles before getting into the Old Testament in detail (one exception being the Creation and fall of man in the start of Genesis). This is good advice for a nonbeliever but we should not be constrained to this plan for someone; for instance truly seeking out God's truths in places like Revelation or perhaps some of the Old Testament prophets. In fact for a person of Jewish heritage it is probably best as several evangelists do in Israel today (Zev Porat as one example) to go directly to the Old Testament first (especially the taboo passage in Isaiah 53.)
These days; of course we can't assume any of the doctrines which a couple generations ago were never or hardly ever questioned are still held. These include but not necessarily limited to the inerrancy of God; the physical reality of an eternal heaven and hell; God's promises to national Israel still being valid today; the Millennial reign; or PreMillennial Pretribulation rapture. Admittedly these last three subjects were throughout much of the Reformed era and in Catholic traditions before that not believed.
My last two posts were a general look at accuracy of historical and more recent information as seen through the media and historical accounts. A realistic view of the Bible sees it set apart as having all things necessary for instruction; rebuke; etc as 2 Timothy 3:16 states. We often use other sources such as Foxe's Book of Martyrs to fill in the details; and most of us have the idea that all but one of the original Apostles was martyred. The scripture only mentions James the brother of John killed in Acts 12:2. We can assess from the writings of Paul that he knew his time of departure was at hand; but Acts 28 stops short of his martyrdom. From Christ's words to Peter in John 21:18 as to his fate of martyrdom as well. Whether John in Revelation was boiled in oil unsuccessfully before his Patmos exile is not as far as I know proven.
Often we CAN read into what is not said in scripture. Jesus was basically left out of anything but a bare bones description of his time before His minstry began after John the Baptist baptised Him. I would imagine he was perfect in being a carpenter and all that it entailed but we just need to understand that He fulfilled the law perfectly in His life and ultimately His death.
When we look at Christ's personal prayer life in particular; we see that He knew the importance of withdrawing before certain events and praying all night at times; as He did before picking the Disciples; as well as fasting and prayer which He likely did both practices before upbraiding those who didn't remain proactive in general to be spiritually strong at the casting out of the demon in Matthew 17:21. We don't see ANY indication that any of the Apostles or Disciples prayed before the Resurrection. It doesn't prove it didn't happen but certainly indicates it was probably very deficient.
The Bible clearly does NOT put people but God on display. Even mourning for Moses had to end ( Joshua 1:2).
The usual approach to this subject is to cite a resource that is available; such as the very well known "Daily Bread" devotions; to convicting ones (Oswald Chambers being my favorite). When undergoing a determination as to use of a particular daily reading we must be diligent to ascertain that the scriptures themselves are being studied in the proper context and the focus isn't on side subjects such as frilly sentiments that deliberately cherry pick for things to put us in a good mood and ignore the weightier scriptures. We should also make a realistic commitment to set apart a certain amount of time daily which of course may vary according to spiritual maturity; and the other things the Lord has in our life that is required of us.
Ultimately; we should learn to be workmen that are approved ( 2 Tim. 2:15) and meditate on the Word day and night ( Joshua 1:8). If it goes into our brain and leaves as soon as we enter into a different task then we haven't allowed it to transform us.
Even if we use devotionals that are generally sound scripturally; there is always an exception that pops up at times; where it appears a statement is being made that is not scripturally in line with what we were taught. We need to be aware and Bereans.
Part of what we must do is allow ourselves not to be held fast to certain things that are neither right or wrong but what we have become accustomed to. This includes verse headings (arbitrarily chosen much of the time to make translations clear in our language); the order of scripture (Job probably being the oldest book or at least as old as Genesis); and not being obsessive on a particular translation (such as KJV only adherents). That being said we must avoid obvious spurious translations and be aware that there are issues with any translation. KJV I would say is better in general as to holding to proper context with Christ's Divinity than some other renditions with a few isolated words in passages.
Here are some Scriptures of God's care & promise to Israel: Genesis 12:1-3; Joshua 1:1-6; Psalm 83:1-18 (noting Asaph's appeal to God against those nations confederate against Israel. That all men might know the LORD' Name is Yahweh - not Allah); Psalm 122:6,7; Isaiah 41:8-16; Ezekiel chaps 38 & 39 (still future); Zechariah 2:8,9; Zechariah 12:2-9 (still future).
And we also see God's protection over Israel even after the birth of the Jewish State in May 1948: soon after this, five Arab armies (Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon & Iraq) came against a small Israeli opposition & were resoundly defeated. 1967 (six-day war) where Egypt, Jordan, Syria & Lebanon) attacked Israel to wipe them off the map. They were not only defeated by Israel but Israel captured the Sinai, Golan Heights, Gaza & the West Bank. 1973 (on Yom-Kippur), Egyptian & Syrian forces attacked Israel on this holy day (Day of Atonement). Once again Israel was able to defeat this surprise attack against them with the help of U.S. forces. And 2016, in December, a mysterious storm cloud (of dust and rain) put a barrier between Israel and ISIS. Reports say the storm stopped on the border of Syria and ISIS was 'unable' to enter Israel's Golan Heights area. God has not forgotten Israel.
We are in the "Church Age" at this point; and heading toward the final version of the "Revived Roman Empire" as seen in Daniel 2:42-44. The final composite kingdom of the Antichrist is like a lion (Babylonian symbol but modern day Great Britain); a bear (Media Persian symbol also Russia) a leopard (fitting into the Greek or Mediterranean Kingdom); and the final composite Beast of the last days which encompasses the entire earth ( Daniel 7:2-8). This will come eventually with the Antichrist for "one hour" (probably the 7 Year Tribulation) taking over a kingdom of 10 Kings who are yet to have a kingdom ( Revelation 17:12).
Since nations are still mentioned in verses about the Millennium ( Psalm 86:9 as one example) coming to the Lord it is clear they are in God's design to be restored. For now; territorial integrity is important; although God will have to settle many disputes when He comes ( Isaiah 2:4).
God has established through the Abrahamic covenant and other promises to Joshua and Caleb that He would give the 12 Tribes inheritance of all the territory described from the "Great Sea" to the Euphrates ( Joshua 1:4). God does honor covenants though; so agreements made with those in other nations or even Israel itself say with settlements should be honored.
We also need to keep in mind Joshua 5:14 where the Angel of the Lord states He is for the Lord's army not necessarily siding with anyone. This is why God allowed Israel's enemies to prosper at times for chastisement; as was made clear in God's prophecies about Babylon and even the pagan invaders stated this (although I can't find the verse at present). It is humbling to think about this at present; we in our proud nation think the worst thing to happen would be invasion from another nation and submission but are we better than Israel and the Babylonians? This may happen before the Tribulation if He tarries (our borders are already breached BTW). Food for thought.

you need to go back to geneses and to be exact in Hebrew where you find in Genesis one 1:1 in Hebrew Elohim. the Name ELOHIM is in Plural and immediate we are introduced to God the father God the son and God the Holy Spirt.
Now we see from the very first chapter of the bible The Trinity created all we see visible and the invisible which we can note see with our naked eyes.

If that is your question (from Joshua 2:1), then it was Joshua who took the initiative to send out the spies, based upon what the LORD had commanded him to do (in Joshua 1:2). I don't think that Joshua knew about Rahab, as nothing was known about this city or the new territory they were about to enter & conquer. And the two spies themselves, may not even have known much about Rahab. We can only guess about this; my thought is that Rahab probably ran some sort of inn, as well as being a woman of ill repute (or, maybe she once was such a person, but the stigma stuck with her & attached to her name). So the two spies probably took whatever accommodation they could easily get - it just happened to belong to Rahab & God had planned this & subsequently used Rahab to help Joshua & Israel overcome the city. And after the city was razed to the ground & all living were killed, Rahab & her family members were spared as promised & taken out to live with God's people ( Joshua 6:23,25). I have stated the verse where Jesus casts out the demon where prayer and fasting were needed for that type of demon; thus the disciples couldn't cast it out ( Mark 9:29). It appears that Jesus expected the disciples to seek the Father through prayer as to the challenges to come; so that it could be revealed to them when fasting was needed. Christ of course had the power to do all things irregardless; but in His dependence on the Spirit so that He could "suffer all things as we did but without sin" ( Heb. 4:15) meant that He trusted in the Spirit for all of His miracles and actions.
Obviously; prayer is something we all should do constantly ( 1 Thess. 5:17). We are also to meditate day and night ( Joshua 1:8). We see how Christ was up all night in prayer before He picked His first group of Disciples; and how at the end the Disciples were to fight sleep due to sorrow ad exhaustion and pray to avoid temptation.
There is no set command for fasting; it appears to have been something the fear of God instigated for instance by the pagan king in Nineveh ( Jonah 3:7). Esther had a 3 day fast before appealing to the King to save her people and reveal her origin in chapter 4; verse 16. The King of Babylon fasted for a night when he was disturbed about Daniel being placed in the lion's den in Daniel 6. Churches these days probably do this much less often than should be done; certainly a short fast would be proper more often than long ones. There are health benefits as well; obviously one without water should be limited. It would seem that God intervened before 40 days without water in the case of Nineveh or it was a miracle they survived that long.
We are to be filled with the Spirit as we are emptied of ourselves.
So my conclusion is..to ask God for patience or chastisement...that can be left to everyone in their prayer closet.
Further thought here is how to process our "sanctification" so that we may learn from what God is teaching us in the process in real time. Here are some suggestions...
1. Preparing the journey with prayer. Prayer (thankfully) for such matters as asking God to discipline us can also be laden with requests for Him to bring those individuals in our life to guide us in wisdom and discipleship. We should be "proactive" in some sense by always having a mindset of prayer as well as "meditating on the Word day and night". ( Joshua 1:8). We can trust God's Word to give us counsel; wisdom and strength as well as words to respond to others. This; of course does NOT mean we hurl verses in our own anger about God destroying the wicked when we are annoyed with someone.
2. Learning from our mistakes. There needs to be both an avoidance of thinking we can predict the outcome of things based on our human wisdom of similar situations in the past. There are certainly cases where we can see manipulative individuals who are set on a course of action to constantly resist us. There are clearly some situations such as husbands and wives and their relationship that cannot be avoided. There are other cases where I have found it is prudent to be prepared for detours needed to avoid unnecessary time with those the enemy clearly has placed in our path as distractions. I am saying in general here that true guilt due to our own sin is different than imposed guilt of narcissists. In such cases our confidence needs to be in the Lord where the foundation is and the anchor of our souls ( Heb. 6:19). This is key to stand as a bulwark against the fiery darts of the enemy ( Eph. 6:16).
3. Working on a diary. There is some merit to keeping a written record for future use to indicate how we have progressed (or not) in our growth in the Lord.
The Psalm certainly reminds us of Satan's role as the "accuser of the brethren". This is recorded in the earliest texts of scripture in Job; and Genesis; and is seen in the still future events in Revelation 12. Since the word them and they seems to be the context of the Psalm there are certainly powers and principalities under Satan's rulership that would probably plan to work on people to search out "iniquities" and "inward thoughts" such as verse 6 show.
It would seem that perhaps in the final judgment at Armageddon the destruction of those who are blaspheming God and no doubt the saints as Satan himself is starting in Revelation 13 will cause some of the fear in verse 9 and the rejoicing in verse 10.
I have tended to look to future prophetic final fulfillments to be strongly suggested not only in Psalms but most of scripture. There are certainly many things applicable to David as this one (albeit not specifically mentioning any particular event in his life that inspired these words).
Looking at my "cheat sheet" from church a few years back there are many types of Psalms; the "lament" one has a title/intro.; complaint; promises (petition); A statement of trust and Praise. (Thanks to K. D. a former elder in my church who taught this study; guess I'm not allowed to mention names here).
At any rate; there is certainly some mystery as to the order of the Psalms (not chronological) and to just when and where certain types appear; also of course some run through multiple chapters with the same writing. There are acrostic patterns we can't see except in the original language. May these verses and all scripture be real to us as we meditate on the Word day and night ( Joshua 1:8).
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 exhort us to pray continually. We should note that giving thanksgiving and rejoicing in Christ are other factors. Meditating on the Word day and night ( Joshua 1:8) certainly would be the other principal act associated with answered prayers. This verse in greater detail gives the exhortation to DO the things in the Word; and gives the added benefit of prosperity and success. This causes us to look at Solomon's prayer for wisdom when God also gave Him what He DIDN'T ask for in terms of exceedingly great riches. 1 Kings 3:5-15 shows this coming to pass; but of course the later sins that Solomon committed despite being warned of God to avoid basically caused the downfall of Israel.
There are obvious guidelines of what to avoid in seeing answered prayer in the Book of James chapter 4. We should note that this passage can be broadly taken for ANY type of lust (sexual; power; material gain) that comes from the world; flesh or the Devil. This would be something that hopefully would be limited to new; immature believers or the prosperity preaching crowd.
There are a number of basic concepts that need to be covered here providing that we are at least attempting caution as to the warnings in James; including our character not being "double minded" for example; where a person is warned that they should expect nothing from God. (see James 4:8).
Fact One: The primary purpose of prayer should be for the sake of God's Kingdom. The most obvious conclusion should of course be in accordance with the Lord's Prayer that HIS will is done and His Kingdom comes; and that He gets all the power and glory. ( Matthew 6; Luke 11 version somewhat abbreviated). That prayer is written as a general concept of prayer; only asking for "daily bread" as a request for human needs. It is not to be rehearsed as a mantra.
Fact Two: Prayers need to be secondarily for the edification of the Body. (more in next section)
