Living in the Spirit (part 5) Separating the Spirit of truth from the spirit of error

In detecting a counterfeit; we are often told that experts rely on their experience seeing the genuine in order to detect that which appears at first glance to be the same but on further investigation has some telltale sign of fraud. I would add to that statement in saying that we should learn to recognize all the appearances of truth and how the enemy uses such things to appeal to the flesh in order to draw us in through whatever toxin he chooses to conceal in the punch; so to speak.

In studying this subject; one can't overlook the key concept of TRUST in God as being the foundation of our walk. The Lord giveth; and the Lord taketh away. Blessed be the Lord ( Job 1:21). In studying Job we see that he started his trial well; praising the Lord even when his wife told him to "curse God and die" ( Job 2:9). This was after the blitzkrieg of tragedies that crashed forth; and after his own personal afflictions. We need to keep in mind that it appears he was entirely unaware that Satan was behind the calamaties themselves and all that went on behind the scenes in the councils of God and the angelic/demonic realm.

We are told not to complain or grumble; but nonetheless pleading our cause wasn't even foreign to Christ when He cried greatly for the cup "if possible" to be removed; nonetheless God's will to be done ( Luke 22:42). It is hard to believe in our greatest trials and suffering that they pale in comparison to the "exceeding joy" to come ( Romans 8:18). When we see Paul's struggle, though we are well aware of the extraordinary amount of suffering which God promised he would endure for His nane's sake at the inception of his ministry ( Acts 9:16). Some of this; no doubt may have been due to his earlier persecutions to set an example as well as to chastise him; not as final judgment but as in the case of David caught in adultery; residual damage in this life for earlier sins.

When Jesus was here on Earth, He was not bound. The Holy Spirit was bound to Jesus. Because He Himself says. It is for your benefit that I pass away. Then He will send the Comforter to us. Thru? John 16:7

What He had to do was to be obedient to Our Father God. Don't you think Jesus suffered during His time here on earth? In Gethsemane just before He was captured. Prayed He so earnestly that He sweated blood. Mark 14:35-36 Luke 22:44 Those Jews who are not in Israel but scattered around the times of World War II and before it. These were collected at least in Europe as the attackers made ghettos. All of these had free will to accept Jesus. And get the Holy Spirit. Just like us these days. So neither you nor I know if it was right Jesus saved people in the concentration camps. It's entirely possible it was. Yet they praised the Lord in their hearts, minds, and bodies. Even though hunger took them and famine was in the midst of those with diseases and worse, they had their faith in God. The Jews are God's people and have never lost sight of God. It is also why we should pray for them, pray for peace, and so on. It is our duty Alex. Our ministry is actually preaching the gospel also to Jews and not always just other Gentiles.

If it hadn't been for the Jews, we wouldn't have gotten the Bible, the Word that came alive to us. Praise be to the Lord Jesus Christ who managed to be obedient all His days! Hallelujah Amen. Thank you dear Jesus, And not just a man but one who also overcame death! Hence Christ.

Intimacy with God and knowing God further thoughts.

Perhaps an illustration from the Gospels would be of further help in understanding God's interaction with His own. The disciples were all given nicknames at the onset of their ministry after being called for His use. We see many verses where Jesus addressed issues of pride among certain of His disciples and in particular there was individual refining in Peter's life who the Lord seemed to focus all of His attention in terms of individual counseling at least in regard to what was written down in the scriptures.

Before we get on Peter's case for not trusting God while walking on the water; for instance we should note the fact that no one else was even attempting to do so at the time. Likewise; when He was headed for a fall; Jesus already knew it and was in fact praying for Him that He would restore His brethren when He was "converted" ( Luke 22:32). ALL the disciples ran away as was prophecied ( Matt. 26:31) so they were all guilty; but Peter was boastful and proud. We are warned not to allow Satan a foothold; of course but ultimately the Lord used Peter to be a cornerstone or rock in starting the church and foreknew; of course his martyrdom to come. That is something which we all struggle with fear of death in regard to physical suffering. That of course brings us to the pinnacle of trust in the Lord such as is mentioned in Psalm 23.

Trusting the Lord and not leaning on our own understanding ( Prov. 3:5-6) certainly needs to be a foundation of our walk with Christ. One thing our experience should teach us is that we cannot trust ourselves outside of God's plans for us. It should as I have pointed out recently involve trusting God to provide answers in our lives from within the fellowship of the saints that He has placed in our lives to refine us as well as for us to edify as fellow adopted sons and daughters in Christ. They are as 2 Corinthians 4:7 says "treasures in earthen vessels". Open our eyes.

My understanding they are part of each other. Obedience is dependent on our faith that we live by with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The first Adam broke the relationship and God's dwelling place in man when he was disobedient in eating from that tree. Faith can be measured through our obedience which is the visible expression of our faith.

The Bible says that Jesus learned obedience from what He suffered and was made perfect, Heb. 8:5. Jesus gave us perfect examples of being obedient He did nothing of His own it was the Father's will not His, Luke 4:18 John 5:30 John 14:10. When Jesus was in the garden just before He was taken, He asked the Father if there was a different way but not His will but the Father's, Luke 22:42 but Jesus was obedient unto death.

We cannot be saved by works; we cannot earn our salvation. Is being obedient considered works? My understanding is no. Obedience is not an option it is a command, we either obey or disobey like the first Adam. If we are obedient, we are dutiful and compliant to His commands.

Our faith, Heb.1:1 by the grace of God that we fully trust Him regardless of what we may face, not with our logic but with His, and the promises God has given us, our hope is not in this world but the eternal one that our hope is in, that with patience we wait and watch for to come.

I would hope you take this in love, that you look back at Exodus on your last two post on Leviticus 23. The Passover day is not a sabbath, it is a preparation day for the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread that is the sabbath day, the 15th. Passover day is the 14th of Nisan/Aviv this is the day that Jesus was crucified and the reason they had to put Him in the tomb before the sun went down that would be the 15th a Sabbath day.

Jesus and His disciples did not eat the Passover meal, Luke 22:15-16. The Jewish day starts at sundown so when Jesus and the disciples went in the room for the last supper, that was the beginning of the Passover day, the 14th the preparation day for the 7-day feast.

So, the last supper, going into the garden, Judas betrayal, Jesus' arrest, trial, crucifixion. When Jesus died was the same time the Passover lambs were being killed, all on the 14th, Passover day before the sun went down.

Like in Exodus they killed the lamb on the 14th Exodus 12:6-10 and put the blood on the door posts and had to stay in the house and eat the meal that night that would be the 15th, and could not leave until after midnight, Exodus 12:29,42.

John 1:5 conclusion. When we read John 13:30; we see Judas Iscariot going out "immediately" after given the "sop" which was given traditionally to an honored guest. The narrative continues into John 14 and 15 all the way to John 15:16 which mentions the Disciples being called; chosen AND ordained (sans the traitor). The "fruit production" comes to those God has enabled to do this.

They have promises therefore of inheriting eternal life and the glories of heaven ( John 14:2).

The cost of being a disciple of course was soon to be revealed; namely in Peter's fall. In Luke 22:32 the word "converted" is used in order to describe what would soon happen. Christ knew all; of course that Peter was one of His own (as He would give nicknames to emphasize characteristics of the Apostles). In John 1:42 Jesus said that he would be called Cephus or the rock; later on in Matthew 16:16 we see that Christ was revealed to Peter as to who He was. Therefore the word converted here would mean to be restored spiritually after the fall; but it showed the effects of true repentance. Peter until this point was impetuous and immature in many ways as a child in his walk; so the meaning here is when Peter's outward behavior would represent a radical transfomation and involved dying to self. This made him ready after the Resurrection to take on what he knew would end up in martyrdom ( John 21:18). It also gave him boldness in the Book of Acts despite a realistic fear of his own persecution.

Let us therefore take heed; that we are slow to speak as well as swift to hear and slow to wrath (mixed up interpretation of James 1:19). We need to look out for false teachers as well; who self identify as believers; but show no evidence of true faith and producing good fruit.

My understanding is the arm of the LORD revealed was for Israel and Jesus came for the lost sheep of Israel Matt. 15:24 and fulfill the law and the prophets, Matt. 26:54.

Hi karla. That's a good question & to add to the confusion, I'll throw in Numbers 10:29.

In Exodus 2:18, we read his name as Reuel & this means "friend of El (God)". This was very likely his given name.

In Exodus 3:1, Jethro (or, Yithro) is from the word, 'Yether', meaning 'his excellence'. So it seems that Jethro is the same person as Reuel, but Reuel was his given name & Jethro may have been a secondary name or honorific title that others might have called him by. As an example from the New Testament, we read of Simon who was also known as Peter ( Matthew 4:18); again known by two names (Simon, Luke 22:31; Peter, Matthew 8:14; Simon Peter, John 13:6).

Then in Numbers 10:29, some believe that Hobab is yet another name for Reuel/Jethro, adding to the confusion, and so several opinions have been given to interpret that 'anomaly'. However, I see it simply as: that Hobab was Reuel's (or Raguel's) son, as Raguel (Reuel) was Moses' father-in-law. This type of family tree descriptions can also be found in many other passages, including 1 Chronicles 5:14, Nehemiah 11:7.

Human wisdom and Godly wisdom.

We see a lack of wisdom of any ssort these days as we continue to increase in knowledge exponentially (shades of Daniel 12:4). In one sense; we cannot rely on our own understanding ( Proverbs 3:5-6) but on God alone. There are certain principles whether of law; crops; finances or other things which all those under the sun are embarked in to one degree or another with whatever freedoms God allows. We certainly cannot operate against human wisdom or our conscience when we don't do something we know we are supposed to do ( James 4:17). As with anything else there are extremes we should try to avoid. Christ; for instance when He was on earth told those He sent forth two by two not to bring much along with them ( Mark 6:8); but later once He was preparing for His departure the instruction changed ( Luke 22:36). This included money; clothes and a weapon for protection from thieves. We have two major things that we need to avoid; the first being seeking things for ourselves outside the will of God or trying to "help God" by speeding up the process. Having the understanding that everything belongs to God and that we take nothing into this world and cannot take anything out helps a great deal ( 1 Timothy 6:7). The second thing is not laying down our life for the Lord. At the extreme this would be martyrdom; but everyday tests where we choose to serve others above our own desires we "die a little" bit at a time as we carry our cross daily. Things like marriages of course can be a major factor and in some cases individuals who can remain chaste can be in unique advantages for unfettered service toward the Lord. Again; as with anything else I have seen more than enough Godly Christian marriages where more than sufficient attention is paid to the wife and children along with a generous amount of time dedicated to corporate worship; prayer; evangelism and small group studies. Being equally yoked of course works this out best.

Do you believe all of Jesus's words are parables? If so, then when Jesus said He was speaking in parables that also would be a parable, right? It would seem strange to believe 99.9% of what Jesus says is a figurative parable, except only one verse or phrase where He says He's speaking in parables, correct? For example Mark 4:11 is literal?

To me its evident when Jesus or anyone else in the Bible is speaking literally, telling a story, using a figure of speech, metaphor, simile, just as its usually evident when conversing with anyone else in person.

"Dost thou believe on the Son of God?" John 9:35 KJV

Jesus said He's the Son of God, do you believe he was being literal or telling a parable when He said that?

"Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?" Luke 22:48 KJV

Another literal quote from Jesus which do you believe is literal that Judas did in fact betray Him with a kiss, or do you believe this is also a parable?

Do you believe Jesus is Lord as it says in Colossians 2:6-9 and the Mighty God as it says in Isaiah 9:6?

What comes to my mind, the scripture that agrees and tells me that when we come to the Father in a time of need, we have a mediator, a Priest who knows what we are feeling, one who has been there, one who knows what temptation feels like, one who knows the fear of death, but the only one who did it perfectly without sin.

Hebrew 4:14-16 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. 15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Jesus' prayer was answered, in Luke 22:43 just as He strengthens us when we are in need, facing things in our life we could not without Him, even if we are facing death, if we ask. I know times in my life He strengthened me and gave me the courage to endure, if not, I would not be here.

I think that GOD's WORD the Bible is clear, when we study, & pray for wisdom. James 1:5,

1st GOD gave people dominion: Genesis 1:26,27,28, = power, dominion ect. Within 2nd Generation & continued; 1st crime: Genesis 4:6-9, & Genesis 4:23, dominion with disregard for others, even anothers very life. Genesis 6:5, Exodus 1:8,13,16,22, even disregard for life of children

Even then though GOD doesn't disregard HE repayed. Exodus 12:29, Exodus 13:15, notice the whole chapter of Exodus 12, points to John 3:15,16,17, Again people with dominion & power disregarding life of innocent: Luke 22:1,2,7,20,54,63,64, continued; Luke 23:1,2,15,21,33,34,

Also: they killed their own children, Leviticus 18:21, Leviticus 20:1-8, that GOD had destroyed nations for that sin! 1Kings 11:7, 2Kings 23:10,

Many people call the Passover an eight-day feast, even in Jesus' day. Some say Feast of Unleavened Bread and some feast of Passover. Passover is on the 14th and the Feast of Unleavened Bread is on the 15th -21st. In Matthew 26:17 it starts; Now the first day of the Feast of Unleavened BreadIn Mark 14:12 and in Luke 22:7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread when the Passover must be killed In John 13:1 Now before the feast of the Passover this was after the Last Supper. The Last Supper was on Passover Day.

Passover Day is a preparation day for the Feast of Unleavened Bread. The first day of the Unleavened Bread Feast is the Sabbath, Exodus 12:16. On the 14th all leaven had to be purged from the houses and Jerusalem. This is the preparation day that is in scripture not Friday the preparation day for the weekly Sabbath.

John 18:28 confirms the Passover lambs had not yet been sacrificed or eaten because they did not want to be defiled, they passed the blood of the lambs to the altar. This would be done after the sun started going down, any time after noon. This was going on at the same time Jesus was hanging on the cross. The Passover lamb was eaten on the night of the 15th the night they went out of Egypt, Exodus 12:29-32. Jesus was in the tomb when the Passover meal was eaten.

If Jesus was crucified on Friday, we do not have three days and three nights and there are not that many days covered in Matt, Mark, Luke, and John. If Jesus was crucified on Wednesday, Thursday would be the Sabbath, the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, and the women could have gone to the tomb on Friday because it would be a preparation day for the weekly Sabbath, So Thursday would be the only day of the week that fits scripture.

That gives Thur. day, Fri. night and day, Sat. night and day Sun. night Jesus rose before sunrise, John 20:1 it was still dark.

Godly sorrow leads to repentance; worldly sorrow to death. ( 2 Cor. 7:10). Note that it also leads to salvation and no regret.

This is illustrated with Peter who clearly knew Christ; but he in a sense had to be "converted" ( Luke 22:32) from the mindset of his old nature. This would be accomplished after the Resurrection and confirmed by the questioning of Christ as to whether he loved Him and the prophesied death for Christ that he would have to endure in the future ( John 21:18).

Judas Iscariot was only sorry for the consequences of what he did and still only saw Christ as the world did; a good man. Satan had held him for years with his greed and of course he betrayed Christ for a pittance: 30 pieces of silver. This suicidal mindset was probably a result of Satan's hypnotic pull suddenly ending; perhaps when whatever human conscience he had finally recovered. There was never any recognition given of Christ's Holiness nor was Judas ever rebuked by Him as Peter often was and no doubt everyone else. He "rebukes all those He loves" ( Rev. 3:19). Even though the other disciples ran away they still stayed from afar to witness what was happening. Judas couldn't face that. It is tragic that he could get to see the Resurrection 3 days later. He only faced an end to all meaningful existence in his mind; not realizing that he then should have sought repentance and a right standing with God. It is the sin nature which is the root cause; and we need to be Born Again to put our old self to death.

Galatians 5:4 discusses "falling from grace" in terms of attempting to follow the law again and whoever breaks it is accursed; where anyone who breaks the law even in one area according to James 2:10 breaks it all. Falling from grace would mean once trusting in grace then going back to the law; hence never really having a salvation experience where we are enlightened to grace being needed and our own helpless ability to follow the Lord. (see Romans 8:5-8).

This is medically possible if one is under great mental duress. When this happens it causes the capillaries to open up and you sweat blood. You have to remember his father was showing him what he was going to go through. Jesus's death had to be of his own freewill. That is why he asked his father " to take this cup from me, not my will but thine be done" . Jesus was so tortured that he was unrecognizable as a man. We read this in psalm 22 which describes his crucifixion. He says I am no more a man I am a worm. This worm that he refers to was used to dye clothes scarlet. He was so beaten for 24 hours that he was unrecognizable. This is why that had to get one Simon of Cyrene to carry his cross. You have to read all the gospels to price together and get a full picture of his crucifixion. I hope this helps, and may God bless you in your thirst for knowledge and understanding.

I had read about this medical condition too. So I think it I very likely that Jesus did, indeed, seat drops of blood. But i do think that we may not know for sure this side of heaven and that whether or not He did actually seat blood or not is not a crucial matter to resolve. But this account in the garden of Gethsemane does show us the intensity of the burden of the sins of the world upon our Lord and the agony of it for Him.

Hi GiGi, the greek text says exactly word by word "and His sweat was (or was made/became) like clots of blood going down to the earth" My opinion is that it was like, not actually drops of blood., although some people here claim the latter.

The medical term is called " hematohidrosis " extreme levels of stress, can cause it. " There are multiple blood veins netted around the sweat glands, in net formation, that constrict under the pressure of great stress" "fear and intense mental contemplation are the most frequent causes" recorded under National Library of Medicine, .gov

Let's look into Jesus' stress._._ he had known people were plotting to kill him, Matthew 17:22-23, Matthew 21:38, Mark 9:31, Luke 20:14, Luke 22:2, Jesus knew it was the religious hypocrites that were plotting instead of teaching the sheep (his beloved sheep) John 8:37, John 7:1,19,20 even calling him opposite of Christ, John 10:19,20,

Mark 10:34, here: Jesus even knew how & explained it. Isaiah 52, Psalms 22,

He knew he would be on public display, clothing taken from him, they would gamble for them: Psalms 22:18,19

Jesus knew he was being betrayed & even said go quickly, John 13:27,

Jesus knew the followers would scatter, anyone who loves those who depend on them in anyway never wishes to leave them, especially unprepared, afraid, in danger, alone, being pursued, John 17, John 10:11,12, Luke 12:4, Matthew 24:9,

Those are only some of the details. Extreme stress none of us have faced to that level. Hebrews 4:15,

Hi Sylvia. This question came up a couple of years ago & I thought to research it to see whether there had been such an occurrence, or similar to it, before.

There is an actual condition of blood sweating, medically termed as, Hematidrosis. In fact, it is claimed that Leonardo da Vinci had written about a soldier returning from battle showing this 'blood sweat' on his face. It seems to be a very rare condition & is caused when the body enters a "fight or flight" situation; the pressure & accompanying agony of life hanging in the balance sometimes causes blood vessels just under the skin (mainly on the face) to break open & sometimes get squeezed out through the sweat glands.

Whether Jesus experienced this or not, I cannot be certain, though we know that He was in great spiritual agony on the Mt. of Olives ( Luke 22:39-44) calling upon His Father in agonizing prayer, where even an angel came to minister to Him. As this rare medical condition I mentioned, is simply a human body response, & not a result of being in a sinful body of flesh, it could be that Jesus experienced this, or even as Giannis suggested, that Luke reported what the disciples thought they saw, not blood, but the appearance of it, given the darkness of the hour. We can't know for sure as nothing more is given us on this matter.

The text detailing the agony of Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane does say that. I am not sure of the Greek rendering, maybe Giannis can help us with this text.

So my opinion is that His sweat was "like they were big drops of blood", not actually drops of blood, how can that be anyway? Jesus in His agony was sweating a lot and continiously. GBU
