"And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over that he had."
Jacob fearful of his meeting with Esau whom he had duped in an earlier instance takes precaution. Like that over the shoulder look that alerts the policeman on the beat of a malefactor on the loose, Jacob makes his overtutures to Esau who informs that he was on the way. He sends three servants instructing them what to say before they presented his gifts.(v.18) Finally he sends his family, "his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok./ And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over that he had." (vv.22-23)
Jabbok is one of the two streams on the east of Jordan. Compare Jabbok with Ulai mentioned in the vision of Daniel. "and, behold, there stood other two, the one on this side of the bank of the river, and the other on that side of the bank of the river."(Dan.12.5-7) "And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river," Here the angel on that side of the river explains why it was a vision while with Jacob it is as real since he limped in his thigh ever after. Whether on this side or the other Jacob is alone but his reality touches both the world of the Spirit. It is how we need consider 'our walk by faith and not by sight' "I will never leave thee nor forsake thee' is ever present. "Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God." 2 Cor.5.11,7) There shall come a moment in our lives, we shall be all alone, "Therefore thus will I do unto thee, O Israel: and because I will do this unto thee, prepare to meet thy God, O Israel."(Amos.4.12)
What is the significance of the numbers attached to the gifts? Firstly why 20 years in the house of Laban while the ten brethren sold Joseph for 2x10 pieces of silver? Jacob became Israel by prevailing upon God and man. Two accuses the guilt of the ten was against God and man.
"And said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left shall escape."
God had promied Jacob to be with him." and I will be with thee.". In the light of this promise the angels meeting him at Mahanaim is to evoke the same legion of angels Jesus could command. "Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?"(Mt.26.53). His anguish was in his flesh while in his Spirit what the Spirit had already revealed was something else. This dilemma is explained by St Paul, "But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his./And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness/But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you."(Rom.8.9-11)
The Spirit sets the scene for our instruction. He divided his people and good in two bands and send them over,"Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands."This brings comparison to what Mary chose. Jesus testifies,"But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her."(Lk.10.42) Because of respect unto the recompence of the reward' one has to treat like St Paul,"Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,"(Phili.3.8) Two millennia of Christianity has merely run off from the back of great many Christians as water from the back of a duck, and what do we hear,'prosperity!
Glory we are children of God, peacemakers, happy at times, simple as doves and cunning as serpents. And as the word I received today. May we remind ourselves that we do not know what the spirit can do. Jesse I have experienced so much with Jesus and He would fill the whole earth with His experiences. And I am following Him who has done so much for me. In these times I have experienced that it is important to pray for those who have been taken-away. And of course everyone else so we do what we can, not rush. Have a blessed summer and we can rejoice in the Lord, Amen in Jesus Christ.
Luke 9:51-56 All Glory to Him.
" And the Lord said unto Jacob, Return unto the land of thy fathers, and to thy kindred; and I will be with thee."
It is God who tells Jacob. He was with Jacob as he slept at a certain place called Luz. It has another name, Bethel and he realised it when the Spirit set up the ladder in a vision. It is thus we are called in his Son. Now we shall come to Mahanaim where Jacob was not alone. " And the Lord said unto Jacob, Return unto the land of thy fathers, and to thy kindred; and I will be with thee."(32.1). His death is recorded,"And when Jacob had made an end of commanding his sons, he gathered up his feet into the bed, and yielded up the ghost, and was gathered unto his people."(49.33).That was physical death but he was along in the presence of God so we are living in the land of the living where God is the God of the living. It is for this purpose God called Jacob at Bethel.
In Jacob's blessings also we see the difference between Leah's sons and Joseph. He is the stone of Israel and not of the tribes. In the chapters we follow shall make it clear what the name Israel would signify. Moses tells the people before the Decalogue,"And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation."(Exod.19.6)
Significance of Melchizedek in Ch.14 is to introduce the two offices of anyone called in Christ. His volume is determined by the Covenant in Seven days. The Spirit sets Seven angels in the right hand of Christ in the inaugural vision of Christ. Seven angels with vials, clothed in pure and white linen, and having their breasts girded with golden girdles."(Rev.15.6;19.8). This connects with Christ, 'and girt about the paps with a golden girdle."(Rev.1.13) St John sees Christ superimposed: Melchizedek, the Priest-King. The Spirit introduced the king of Salem so he proves that the Christ must have the fulness of GodFalse teachers do not cry, 'wolf, wolf'. They cry' gnosis' instead to distract us from their heresies. They are wolves in sheep clothes.
Chris, we are also to be vigilant of teachings in our churches with certain pre-conceived notions so their culture tradions are preserved and their interpretations are in line with the policies of the government. Had churches approached the Bible as inerrant it would not have had nationalism, and other heresies.Slavery brought in the South ,doctrines to justify it, for example,
Since I am mentioned in your comment let me refer strictly respond to the garden of Eden part. God is a Spirit and he does not require human parents for the creation of Adam and Eve. The Spirit instructs us with the episode of Jacob in the house of Laban.(Gen.31.7-9) We can also pinpoint the garden was in the mid-heaven. A river went out from Eden to water the garden. Similarly the cattle conceived before the trough and the vision was his teacher. " And it came to pass at the time that the cattle conceived, that I lifted up mine eyes, and saw in a dream, and, behold, the rams which leaped upon the cattle were ringstraked, speckled, and grisled." God says the word and it is on a spiritual world and it is real. As John the Baptist say, "And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham."(Jn3.9). If foolish teachers are blind to compare the passages as for an example shown here, they are spiritually blind..
And yes, the basis for correct understanding & interpretation of the Bible (otherwise, called biblical hermeneutics), does vary among its readers/students. Some (most) take a literal approach to it, while others a spiritual approach (i.e. biblical Truths are infused with other deeper hidden messages that God gave for us to receive). So, with this 'spiritual approach', one can take any Bible passage and do with it whatever one believes is the correct message from God to us; and so we end up with a variety of interpretations, which I believe are not consistent with what the writers understood and wrote under inspiration. Even the apostles, in their writings to the Churches, never adopted such 'deeper' teachings, whether taken from their references to the OT or from inspiration by the Holy Spirit to teach the churches for correct doctrine and conduct.
Gnosticism infiltrated the newly-formed Churches then, even as it does now. And 1 John is a particularly good example of a letter written to address these aberrant beliefs & to warn the fledgeling Church. Some of the gnostic teachings (meaning, 'relating to knowledge (gnosis), particularly esoteric mystical knowledge') were: knowledge is superior to virtue; the non-literal sense of Scripture is correct and could only be understood by a select few; evil in the world precludes God being the only creator; the incarnation is incredible (or, unbelievable), because Deity (the Godhead) cannot unite with anything material, e.g. a body of flesh; and there is no resurrection of the flesh (remember the Saducees?). These are just a few of their beliefs (as given in my study Bible notes). As the apostles believed & taught we too are required to be vigilant against such false teachings.
V1. And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint.
From God's perspective, prayer is a daily responsibility. ( Matthew 6:11 give us today our daily bread). That is a pray to make daily for bread. ( Ephesians 6:18 - Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;). God expect us to pray not only on daily basis but He also gives details on what and how to pray for on those occasions;
1) pray in the spirit. "In the spirit" is the first thing He mentioned on prayer. He starts with the how to pray and where to pray from. According to 1 Cor14:14 (For if I pray in tongues, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.), praying in the spirit is praying in tongues. Meaning, we ought to pray first in and from the spirit. Paul emphasized this in verse. 15 (What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.) The praying in or with understanding is the also but in and with the spirit is the first and the main way of praying. 18 (I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all). Paul prayed in tongue more than he did with the understanding. So the first thing about prayer is to be done a) daily (constantly), b) in the spirit (in tongues of the spirit), and 3) for a long time (more with tongues than with understanding). Paul prayed more in tongues than all of them in terms of volume and value of prayer. Praying in tongues increases weight, value and volume to your prayer because the spirit of God who knows what to pray for as we ought to, is the one praying through us. Praying in tongues helps you to pray better, the God's way, and for long. Tongues helped him to pray for long than he would normally do with understanding.
2)... and not to faint. With out prayer man faints, becomes weak, intimidated, dreadful, ......
It must be clear from these studies from the life of Jacob God had a purpose to lead hin to the house of Laban. God had already blessed him as the heir of promise so he when he blesses Joseph he is separated as special. "The blessings of thy father have prevailed above the blessings of my progenitors unto the utmost bound of the everlasting hills: they shall be on the head of Joseph, and on the crown of the head of him that was separate from his brethren." He is also foretelling why his brethren had to be delivered to Egypt. God judged them already. Joseph as the heir of promise belongs to be among the patriarchs Abraham and Isaac." I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living."(Mt.22.32)
The dream of Jacob prepared him for the 20 years stint in the house of Laban. The sons of Jacob born there are tainted by the same concupiscence (Ruben) to covetuousness which is idolatry ("Out of Asher his bread shall be fat,"-49.20).Leah buys the service of her husband that is a worldly transaction in carnal knowledge.
In the case of Jacob Bethel marked his transition. Peniel where he would meet God face to face prepares the context for Joseph as 'the stone of Israel'. Jesus refers him when he said, |The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner." His brethren rejected him and sold for 20 pieces of silver. It is thus the mantle of the heir of promise falls on Joseph skipping such stalwarts like Moses, David or Solomon.
What was the volume of Joseph? "Even by the God of thy father, who shall help thee; and by the Almighty, who shall bless thee with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lieth under, blessings of the breasts, and of the womb." (49.29) Blessings of the deep connect Joseph to the Son who preached to the souls in prison. Both Egyptian prison and in death he was buried with Christ and heard the gospel?
Leah's fourth son requires our attention. Out of her womb came the son who shall hold the entire 12 tribes of Israel. "and bare a son: and she said, Now will I praise the Lord: therefore she called his name Judah; and left bearing." As with Leah and Rachel Judah has his human side and his failures while the Command number Four invests on his position as the forerunner of Jesus Christ,'behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David.' (Rev.5.5) Compare this with the blessing of Jacob on his death bed, 'The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be." (Gen.49:8-12)
Leah after an interlude receives three more, 30.16) Of these three we shall skip. Here we are to settle upon whom the mantle of the heir of promise falls. Of Joseph we have this blessing from Jacob. "The blessings of thy father have prevailed above the blessings of my progenitors unto the utmost bound of the everlasting hills: they shall be on the head of Joseph, and on the crown of the head of him that was separate from his brethren."(49.24-26). What does the everlasting hills suggest? mount Sion and Zion of course. David of Judah would have built the temple of God but was forbidden. The temple which King Solomon built carried the same infirmity of the flesh of Judah. Whereas Joseph born of Rachel, the bride of Christ names her son Joseph indicating Jesus "The Lord shall add to me another son."(30.23-24)Patriarch Joseph refers to it. "the mighty God of Jacob; (from thence is the shepherd, the stone of Israel:)/ Even by the God of thy father, who shall help thee; and by the Almighty, who shall bless thee with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lieth under, blessings of the breasts, and of the womb."Jacob blesses Joseph as the stone so this resonates with the stone not cut with hands.
In the second para, the line as written, "The POV from The Seven angels with seven trumpets refer to the everlasting Covenant."
It should be read as, "The POV from The Seven angels with seven trumpets refer to the everlasting Covenant, the gospel aspect to be precise."
The heavens declare the glory of God.(Ps.19.1) The firmament or the Heaven is the midst of heaven and what is the handiwork?"This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent" This handiwork is Person specific. Without iit what is everlasting about the gospel? Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and forever..
Without everlasting Covenant the thrust of the everlasting Gospel is blunted. "in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people," Having to preach presupposes the Will of the Father.. So God sending the Son as the Word become flesh gives the invisible God two aspects to whosoever believes in the gospel..He is admitted into the Father Son relationship. This is what created 'after our image'. means. The Word or the Law of the Spirit was with God, a Spirit gives us 'after our likeness'. Revelation of Jesus Christ which God gives are in series of sevens. Seven days explains the Covenant. without it whatever you interpret are merely disconnected from the Father Son fellowship. Thus the book with seven seals refer to the Covenant. The POV from The Seven angels with seven trumpets refer to the everlasting Covenant.. Thirdly The seven angels with seven vials refer to the Messiah aspect of Jesus Christ. He is thhe prince of peace. So a bow without quiver of arrows. The Word was with God gives us one like unto the Son of man, having on his head a golden crown, and in his hand a sharp sickle." White horse or white cloud, either way refers to the cloud of witnesses.(14.14-16) The Word becoome flesh on the white horse, 'And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword," Compare it wiith Hab.3.9-11 "hy bow was made quite naked,... at the light of thine arrows they went:"
Gospel as a sign. The bow in the clouds: "the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth."(Gen.9.16)
"And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,"
This another angel refers to the angel who is revealing the prophesy mentioned in Rev.1.1
what does prophesy mean In terms of the book of the Revelation.? "For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy." This is explained in two halves. In 14.1-5 We have the complete will in the will of the Father. Everlasting Gospel is shown in terms of seven angels with seven trumpets. This is in terms of the Word was God.(Rev.19.10)
The hour also has two halves. First refers to the preaching of the gospel and the half is in terms of executing judgment. Silence of half an hour in heaven refers to the ministry of reconciliation on the earth.
This space of one hour is the power of either for good or for darkness, "When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness"(Lk.22.53)
One hour refers to the spirit of Christ." For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost."(2 Pet.1.21) We have a proof :God tells the king of Gerar that Abraham was a prophet. Until the time of Jesus, the heirs of promise spoke by the spirit of Christ. Thus Jacob on his deathbed curses the sons of Leah, "Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; and their wrath, for it was cruel: I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel."(Gen.49.7) Diaspora of Jewish nation was to happen in fulness of time. Cursed is the man who makes whom God cursed Jew as blessed.. God promises Abraham," And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee."
I believe as long as we ask God to cleanse anything we eat, He will make it clean for us. Not to say that we could deliberately partake of poisons. We should use some common sense. I'm only referring to foods, like meats, fruits, and vegetables.
This refers to the spirit of Christ." For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost."(2 Pet.1.21) We have a proof :God tells the king of Gerar that Abraham was a prophet.
"
Amen. The time is at hand. Do not forget the prophesy, Jesse." Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein."The half an hour tells you what Jesus Christ has done. "here was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour."(8.1) Do you hear and do you keep? Let us do them both. Amen
No, these are not true facts concerning the God of Scripture.
I will certainly pray for you.
I will be keeping you in prayer that you will be delivered from addiction by our Lord and Savior. He is the God who heals and delivers. So, keep your eyes on Him, be diligent in reading the Scriptures, and continually lift up your needs in prayer. You can call upon the Lord anytime, day or night. Getting out from under addiction is a very difficult thing to do without the Lord. You need God's help because on your own you will not have the strength, power, or authority to overcome you desires and conditioned appetite for alcohol or drug use. May God be gracious to you and bring you complete victory over this matter.
